“It was good.” I didn’t tell him I’d heard from Eimy, anxious to hear what his take on it was. “It’s definitely a routine that doesn’t vary unless there’s an incident. And there is rarely an incident.”

“I guess that’s a good thing?”

“Pretty much. Can dinner wait for ten minutes? I want to get into the shower.”

“It can wait. Can I watch?”

“Ha! You can watch. You can join in, if you want.”

“I want,” he said, grinning.

An hour later, we made it back to the kitchen, relaxed, satisfied, and joking around.

“What’s for dinner?” I asked.

“I forgot already,” he said. “Oh, takeout Thai.”

“Delish. So! I guess we need to get the difficult conversations out of the way. When are you leaving for Taiwan?”

“In two days. I’m flying out with Randy and some of the production crew ahead of the cast. We’re taking his private jet, believe it or not.”

“I didn’t know he had a jet.”

“Randy is going to have a cameraman and a producer go on the cast’s flight so they can tape the whole trip. He’s expecting some good stuff, I guess.”

“It’s wise you won’t be part of that. Reality television uses the opportunity to make the participants look as bad as possible. Maybe that’s why he doesn’t want you to be there.”

“Probably. I know there were several sexual encounters on the flight to the last destination, and one of the episodes was called ‘Who Joined the Mile-High Club on this Adventure?’”

“No way! That’s awful. I’m glad you’re not going with the cast, then.” I turned my back to get glasses, not sure if I could keep my poker face in place. “Do you know who the cast is yet?”

He didn’t answer right away, and when I turned around, he was looking at his phone. “I’ve got the list here.” He read off names, mostly women, which made me a little nervous. And last, Eimy Simon.

“Eimy is the mother of the baby I’m caring for. The one I found.”

“Okay, I figured that,” he said, rubbing his chin.

“I wonder if I’ll hear from her tonight to let me know when they’re leaving.”

“Are you sure you want to do that? Six weeks of childcare sounds like a lot.”

“I bet the cast is all young women, middle-aged men, and you,” I said, pulling him back to the conversation.

“There are a few younger guys,” he said. “And I promise you, you don’t need to worry about me. I’m not going to mess around on the boss’s daughter. Although that’s not the only reason.”

I nodded, not ready to let him know my concerns. It was better if he slipped and messed up before I was too invested in the relationship. “I’m glad we saved this conversation for after we had sex,” I said, annoyed.

He hugged me, and I tried to push him off, to no avail, while he tickled me. “Come on. Let’s eat, and you can tell me what your concerns are.”

“I’m not ready to share my concerns,” I said. “It’s too early. I’m not going to start making demands.”

“Ah. Demands. Like us being exclusive.”

“I’m not sure I can ask that of you right before a trip to Taiwan. I’ve heard it’s got a great red-light district.”

I must have hit a nerve, because he laughed. “Laura, you don’t have to worry about that. I’m not eighteen, okay?”

“I’m not worried. Demands are guaranteed to kill a romance. We’ll see how things go when you get back.”
