“Yeah, exactly like that,” I said, flaring my nostrils. “Not some old filthy piece of garbage.”

“Welcome to reality,” Will said, laughing. “Eat up before your food gets cold.”

“You just burst my bubble,” I said, taking a bite of a bagel sandwich.

“Aw, I’m sorry. I’ll run home to shower and change, and we can go out to hunt for treasures.”

“Thank you. I’d better find something special out there.”

We spent the day together, part of it on the beach, where we ran into Pam, who quickly gave her okay to me collecting beach glass. She showed off her find of the day.

By five, I was beat and ready to call it a night. “I have to go into Manhattan tomorrow to clear out the rest of my stuff from the apartment.”

“What are you going to do with it?”

“I thought about selling, but I think I’ll rent it. I’m not sure yet about getting rid of anything my father gave me.”

“That’s probably wise. They say to wait a year after suffering a big loss.”

“Okay, that makes sense.”

“Do you want company going into the city?”

I thought about what he was suggesting, and it was appealing, but I wanted to do it alone, and I was honest with him.

“I’ll do a little meditative work while I’m there. I think I need the closure. So much happened in the place over such a short time.”

“Yes, I understand,” he said. “Can I call you?”

“Of course. I’ll let you know when I’m on my way back.”

He kissed me, and we walked to the door together.

“Thank you for a wonderful twenty-four hours,” I said, hugging him.

“Thank you,” he replied.

“I’ll talk to you later tonight.”

He kissed me again and left from the side door, heading down the path through the wood piles and through the gate to the street.

I cleaned up the living room and put more wood on the fire. Being with someone around the clock was different. I really liked Will and knew if I could tolerate anyone permanently, it would probably be him.

I’d just curled up on the couch with my computer to research more about becoming a private investigator when my phone rang.

“Laura, this is Jake Stevens. I’m a private investigator here in Babylon. Dr. Peterson called me today about the possibility of you hiring on with my company.”

I had to think for a minute who Dr. Peterson was. Will! Flabbergasted, I bit my lip so I wouldn’t laugh into the phone. Sometime between last night and this afternoon, Will had called this guy to get me a job.

“I don’t know what to say. I just mentioned it to him. I recently moved here from the city and had thought about going to the police academy in Manhattan.”

“Do you have a background?”

I explained about my degree and the short-lived job in security at the medical center. And then the conversation about private investigating that Will had started.

“I’d like to meet you on Monday, if you have time,” he said. “My company needs an additional pair of hands, so the timing is perfect.”

We planned to meet at ten on Monday. As soon as I hung up, I sent Will a text.
