You work fast! I have a job interview with Jake Stevens on Monday.

He answered right away. I’m so glad. He’s an upstanding guy, a trustworthy business owner. Fingers crossed!

Then he added a blowing kisses emoji and a smiley face, making me laugh, so I sent him back a heart. I figured since he’d had his hands under my clothes on the couch, a little additional flirtation wouldn’t hurt.

I sat back down with my computer, and my phone rang again. I picked it up and saw it was Mark Spinoza. That could mean he was calling about Yasmine, so I answered.

“Thank you for answering,” he said, and I couldn’t help laughing inappropriately, it turned out.

“You’re welcome. I figured you’re calling regarding the baby.”

“I am. The grandmother doesn’t have the baby.”

A flood of heat washed over my body. “Oh, no.”

“We don’t think she was ever down there. We’re redoubling our efforts to locate Emory Bryant now.”

“I can’t even imagine. Does the mother know?”

“She does. Did you know she’s staying with Ryan Maddox?”

“I knew they were seeing each other but not that they were living together. I feel sorry for her, because he’s apt to take off on her if things get too stressful.”

“It was pretty cheeky of her to move in on your boyfriend.”

“Mark, trust me, he was never my boyfriend. And she’s going to regret getting involved with him someday, and that will be enough punishment.”

“You’re so well adjusted.”

I burst out laughing. “Mark, you don’t know me. Trust me, I am far from well adjusted.”

“Well, what’s going on in your life?”

“Actually, I just started seeing the medical examiner in my new community, and I should keep it a secret for a while longer.”

It was his turn to laugh. “I promise to never stalk you or haunt you,” he said.

“What about you, Mark? Are you seeing anyone?”

“Believe it or not, I am, finally. I think you’d like her. She’s a teacher.”

“Aw, that’s wonderful, Mark.”

“When are you coming into the city again?”

“I’ve got to pack up the rest of my apartment tomorrow. I’ll probably be there in the late morning. I’m kind of dreading it.”

“Oh, no. How about you text me when you get in, and Sarah and I will bring you lunch. Then you can meet her.”

I wasn’t sure about that, but it couldn’t hurt anything. Will wasn’t jealous, and Mark was bringing his girlfriend. It was all good.

“Okay, deal. I’ll see you for lunch.”

We said goodbye, and I ended the call. It was Saturday night, and the wind was pelting the glass with sand. I got up to look out the window and could see a trawler in the distance, pulling its lighted dinghy behind it. Dark figures walked on the beach hand in hand, going north. I already loved living here. The firelight flickered, and a chill went through me for a moment as I wondered about the baby skeleton again.

I picked up my phone and hit redial on Mark’s number.

“You okay?”
