“Actually, I forgot to tell you about something that happened here. Do you have time to hear a short story? I want to pick your brains.”

“I have time for you. What happened?”

I told him about the baby skeleton and that it was how I’d met Will.

“Wow, how awful, on top of what you went through with Yasmine Simon.”

“It really was. I’m probably reading more into all the baby imagery than I should. Anyway, I want to find out how the police investigation is going, but I’m not sure how to go about it. I don’t want to drag my new date into it, since he’s already involved legally.”

“Right, because he’s the coroner. If you trust me with your new location, I can call around and see if there’s anything to learn.”

“Would you really do that?” I asked, regretful that I’d been kind of mean to Mark from time to time.

“Yes, because now I’m curious.”

I paused for a second or two, debating if I wanted to have this connection to Mark after all. I decided it was worth it. “I’m in Babylon.”

“Of course! Tom Adams said his girlfriend had relatives who lived in Babylon. Boy, I’m not a very good detective. I should have figured this out because of Ryan and his associates.”

“That would be Pam, my father’s wife. Tom Adam’s girlfriend was Sandra Benson, correct? She had a child with Pam’s son.” I could finally relax around Mark Spinoza. “You’re fine. What will you do?”

“I’ll call Tom soon and find out if he has any contacts there, and then I’ll see what I can find out.”

“Thank you so much. And just an FYI, on Monday I have a job interview with a private investigator agency here in town.”

“Excellent! You’d be perfect for that. And no blue uniform.”

“I might buy one and wear it just to spite you,” I said.

“Ha! See you tomorrow, Laura,” he said, laughing.

Sunday morning, I texted Will first thing, and he called me right away.

“I miss you already,” he said, melting my heart.

“I miss you, too. I’ll be glad when I’ve cut my ties to New York.”

“What will it take?”

“I need to get rid of my apartment. I might rent it, but that means being involved.”

“I don’t think you should take lightly getting rid of Manhattan real estate. Not that you would! But it’s such a great investment. If you don’t want to deal with it, find an agent. I bet your father had great connections in that area.”

“Okay, that’s a good idea. You know, I’ve had no one except my mother, and for a short time, my dad, giving me advice. I appreciate your wisdom.”

“I hope I don’t come across like your dad trying to tell you what you should do.”

“I promise not to take it that way. If I seem like I am, forgive me. It’s from being independent for so long.”

“I get it. Forgive me anyway for acting like a dad.”

Then I thought of the skeleton. “Will, I don’t want to put you on the spot about the baby bones.”

“You aren’t. I don’t know anything yet. The police are questioning the people they found from the DNA profile.”

“They have that already? I thought it takes months.”

“These days, it’s much faster. I hope they can resolve it quickly, for your sake.”
