Iris

My senses go haywire the moment I step inside the dressing room backstage.

People are talking so loudly, it’s hard to understand what anyone’s saying.

Large mirrors line both sides of the room, reflecting the bright overhead lights. Pretty omega girls sit before them, busily adding last-minute touches to their hair and makeup.

Their identical peach-pink gowns of silk and satin clash against the black and gray of their helper’s hoodies, making them stand out like wild roses in the wilderness.

The air cackles with their nervous energy.

My nostrils are clogged with their sweet, almost cloying perfumes. Reaching into the back pocket of my jeans, I pull out a face mask and put it over my nose and mouth.

Much better, I decide as the heavily scented air is cut off by the layer of cloth.

All this excitement is over the show happening tonight.

The event will showcase these omegas’ skills in music and dance. It’s their sole chance to shine among the other graduates of Winslow Omega Academy and attract the adoration of the most affluent packs in town.

Everything needs to be perfect for their debuts tonight.

My gaze takes in the musical instruments gathered in the corner. Each of these young women would be showing off her skills on stage tonight.

“Iris!” A familiar voice breaks over the chaotic chatter. “Over here.”

Following the sound of my name, I look over to my right.

My older sister, Delilah, is waving at me frantically, her pretty face contorted with stress.

I sidestep around three men carrying a harp between them and reach Delilah.

She’s dressed in the same peach-pink satin gown as the rest of her peers but to my eyes, she’s the single most beautiful young lady here.

Her blue eyes, so similar to our mom’s, shines brightly against her thick, dark lashes. Her lips are painted a glossy cherry-red, catching the eye’s attention immediately.

“Stop staring at me like that!” she snaps, slapping at my arm. “We’ve got a problem. I texted you nearly an hour ago.”

“Sorry,” I mutter, stepping away to avoid another hit. “I was driving Mom and Dad here.” My gaze roves all over her. “You look beautiful, D. Seriously.”

A smile smoothens the annoyance on her pretty face. Grasping my hand, she squeezes it tight. “Thanks, Iris. I’m so freaking nervous!”

Delilah’s two years older than me. She’s a gorgeous omega while I was born as an ordinary beta.

Mom made sure she went through the most rigorous omega training since she was a child.

Delilah studied at the best private school in the county. Along with excelling in her academics, she was coached in playing the harp.

After graduating high school, she came to the omega academy to train among the most skillful omegas in the state. Tonight’s showcase is her final assignment after spending three yearly semesters here.

“You’ll be fine,” I say bracingly. “Just be yourself. That’s all you’ve got to do to impress the alpha horde outside.”

A frown twists those luscious lips. “Mila and her gang’s cooking something. I can feel it.”

“Her again?” I say, rubbing my forehead. Looking over the heads of the other omega debutantes, I scan for Mila.

The young women of the graduating class at Winslow Omega Academy are divided into two groups. One supported Delilah, while the other was firmly on Mila’s side.
