“He didn’t like you grabbing his dance partner,” Damon says without being suppressed. “You shouldn’t have forced him.”

Callahan glances at Julian with distaste. “I wanted her,” he says in a deep, angry tone. “How dare an omega stand in my path?”

“Her? Do you even know who she is?” Damon demands.

“She’s mine,” Callahan spats.

“No, she’s not,” Damon shouts back. “She belongs to me and my brothers.”

Callahan’s mouth presses in a hard line. With a sudden move, he pushes Julian away and grabs my arm. Pulling me against him, he clutches my chin and tilts my face up. “Her neck is bare,” he growls. “This omega hasn’t been taken yet.”

Damon’s lips curve into a sneer. “She’s not an omega.”

“She’s not?” A sliver of confusion swirls in his dark eyes.

“No, she’s not,” Damon insists. “But, sheisours.”

My heart lifts at the sound of pure conviction in Damon’s voice.

A calculating look comes over Callahan. He takes a step back and tilts his head. “It must’ve been a misunderstanding,” he says, glancing at me. Taking a deep breath, he turns toward Damon. “My apologies.”

Damon comes to stand in front of me and Julian. His tall height and broad back shield us both as he watches Callahan disappear into the crowd.

“Come with me,” Damon says.

Julian nods and together, we follow Damon out of the ballroom.

The sound of music falls away along with the loud chatter of the crowd. I breathe freely in the open corridor. Sandwiched between Julian and Damon, I finally feel safe.

“Are you okay?” Julian asks with an anxious look on his face.

“That guy was a creep,” I say. “But, I’m all right now. You came in at the right moment or he’d have choked me to death.”

“I need to find out who he was,” Damon says in a low, grim tone.

“Nox Callahan,” I say, remembering the name the man gave me.

“Callahan?” Damon’s expression grows more serious. Glancing toward Julian, he says, “Come with me to the entrance hall. Caleb’s still there. He can watch over you guys while I go and talk to our men.”

“Is everything okay?” I ask. Damon is usually so chilled out. The sudden change in him makes me anxious. Is Nox Callahan someone to be feared?

“Everything will be,” he says. Moving closer, he caresses my cheek. His expression borders on pain. “Come on. Let me take you guys somewhere more secure.”

Julian and I follow him to the quieter hall. There are mostly men here who’re gathered in small groups. They talk in low voices while valets flit among them, presenting them with trays of food and drinks.

I catch a glimpse of Caleb surrounded by a group of elderly men. He’s speaking while the rest listen to him closely.

“Want a drink?” Julian asks, squeezing my hand.

“Yeah. That’d be nice.”

“I’ll be back in a while,” Damon says. “If Callahan comes bothering you again, make a scene. Get Caleb’s attention.”

“Don’t worry,” Julian says in a grim tone. “I’ll watch over her.”

Their subdued voices heighten my anxiety.

I still can’t figure out who Nox Callahan is. No matter how much I think about it, I’ve never seen him or heard of him before.
