The fact that he knows I’m an omega is disturbing. How could he know what I smell like?

He talked about me looking like my mom but I don’t resemble her at all. It’s Delilah who has inherited her features.

“Let’s go sit over there,” Julian says, gesturing toward a row of chairs that are lined against a wall.

“Sure.”

It’s a relief to sit down after dancing in high heels.

“I’m sorry,” Julian suddenly blurts.

“What?”

“I shouldn’t have abandoned you like that.” He’s not even looking at me as he speaks. “I should’ve fought harder.”

“It’s not your fault,” I say. “You couldn’t reject a direct command from an alpha.”

“I hate being a fucking omega,” Julian says through clenched teeth. There’s a storm raging behind those violet eyes. “I hate not being able to protect you against a fucking animal.”

I place my hand over his and squeeze. “You still helped,” I say. “You brought Damon.”

He shakes his head. “I should be enough.”

“You can’t change the way you’re born.”

He punches his knee, looking furious.

“Julian, it’s okay. I’m fine.”

A waiter appears before us and presents us with a tray that’s laden with crystal chutes of champagne. I eagerly reach for one but before my fingers could wrap around the glass, a loud gunshot shatters the gentle buzz of conversation in the room.

Splat!

The man’s head explodes the next second, spraying me with blood and bits of his flesh.

My shock is so absolute, I feel stunned. Not a whisper escapes my lips even when a scream starts to choke my throat.

My widened eyes watch the man fall to his knees. His fingers still grip the tray as he falls to the carpet in a motionless heap.

“Iris...” Julian starts to say but his voice is drowned by more gunshots that echo around the hall.

Iris

The deafening roar of gunshots is followed by the shattering of a million crystals as the overhanging chandelier comes crashing to the ground. A blanket of shadow falls over the room as shrieks and screams erupt all around me.

Fingers tighten over my wrist. Shocked and paralyzed in my stunned stupor, I feel someone jerking me to my feet.

My ears ring from the echo of gunshots while someone drags me through a sea of men. My feet stumble as I unseeingly follow.

A massive shape collides with me, jerking me away from the person who’s trying to get me the hell out of here. People push me aside as they stampede toward the exit doors.

I blink, trying to make sense of what’s happening.

It was only a second ago that I was sitting with Julian. How could the peaceful room turn into such a chaotic mess?

My hand slowly moves to my face.
