Pain flares up my back.

“Look at me,” Callahan commands, slamming me with a wave of alpha dominance.

I’m forced to look into those dark pools of obsidian. There’s no kindness or warmth there.

He presses up against me, making me feel the prod of his hard lump against my lower belly.

“You look so good in red,” he says with a low whine. “Blood looks exceptionally beautiful against your skin, darling rose. Perhaps, I’ll enjoy making you bleed.”

Leaning in, he swipes his tongue against my cheek. “So fucking sweet.”

Disgust spreads through me. I want to kick him in the nuts and run for my life but his command has me locked in place.

A growl erupts from somewhere close by. Next second, Callahan is ripped away from me and thrown aside.

A tall figure with a broad back stands in front of me, shielding me.

“Caleb,” I whisper with relief.

He glances backward before facing Callahan.

“You’re making a mistake,” Callahan spats. “Let me have her.”

“She’s ours,” says another familiar voice. Damon walks in through the door with Raiden close behind him. Julian steps in last and hurries over to my side.

“Iris Collins is bound to Solveig Pack,” Caleb speaks in a voice that’s vibrating with his dominance. “She belongs to me and my brothers. This is your last warning, Lieutenant Callahan. Don’t force me into taking steps that could strip you of all power.”

“You’re threatening me?” Callahan drawls.

“I’m warning you,” Caleb growls. “Never touch someone that belongs to me.”

“Let me have her and I’ll spare you and your pack,” Callahan threatens. “You don’t want to make an enemy out of me, Solveig.”

“Raiden,” Caleb calls in a commanding tone. “Comb through the CCTV feeds. Find the men responsible for tonight’s attack. Find out who they’re allied to.”

“Yes, Captain,” Raiden responds in a tight voice.

“Damon,” Caleb calls out next. “Take Iris and Julian out of here.”

“Got it,” Damon says and glances back at us.

Julian and I move toward the door as soon as he gestures toward it.

I grab Julian’s hand tightly as he leads me out of the room. My gaze stays fixed on Damon walking in front of us. I’m afraid to even blink, scared that I’d somehow lose them if I closed my eyes.

Pieces of crystal from the fallen chandeliers shatter under my feet. I stay blind to the magnificent paintings and other luxuries of the governor’s house as I’m led out through the entrance hall.

A military truck is waiting outside the doors.

Damon hurries toward it and opens the back passenger doors. “Get inside.”

Julian and I climb in without a word.

Once we’re seated, Damon slams the door shut. Walking to the front, he climbs into the driver’s seat and steps on the gas.

Julian wraps his arms around me, pulling me against him. “It’s okay,” he murmurs. “You’re safe now.” His warmth wraps around me, driving away the chill that has settled deep inside my bones.

My body shivers and I can’t stop the angst-filled whines and sobs that escape me. I’ve never felt so weak and vulnerable in my life.
