“Mate,” I utter the word and feel its weight sinking into me.

He showers me with sweet kisses before falling onto the bed beside me.

My heart is still racing as I struggle to draw in breath.

Julian grabs a sheet and covers both our bodies.

Turning toward him, I wrap an arm around his waist. It’s surreal to meet his gaze, knowing that he’s truly mine.

It’s worth suffering a lifetime of misfortunes to finally be with him. Closing my eyes, I rest my head against his chest. His scent envelops me in a warm cocoon, lulling me into a doze.

The walk from the mansion to the trainee dorms helps clear my mind. Away from Iris’s presence, I can focus on gathering intel on the incident that took place at the governor’s house last night.

A group of soldiers salute me as I enter the dorm building.

Returning a cursory greeting, I make my way to the third floor where the admin department is located. They have a few empty rooms here that we often use as an office space.

Other than Mrs. Davis, there’s no one around the open-structured admin area. I give her a nod and enter the office room reserved for me and my brothers.

Closing the door, I sink into a chair and exhale a long breath.

My stark surroundings further help to clear my mind.

I think about the news sites that should’ve been filled with articles about the attack last night. Why hadn’t any of them reported anything about the incident? Was someone trying to put a lid on the whole attack?

I need answers.

Caleb and Raiden should’ve been home by now. There are a few messages from them, asking me to text them after we reach home. They’re all from last night.

There are no new messages since this morning.

Needing to know what’s going on, I take my phone out and call Caleb.

“This phone is out of network coverage at the moment,” a robotic female voice answers. “Please try again later.”

Anxiety swirls around me at once. Where could he be?

I dial Raiden’s number next.

“Damon,” he answers after merely a ring.

Relief rushes through me the moment I hear his voice.

“Where’s Caleb?” I ask. “Why isn’t he answering his phone?”

“The shit’s hit the fan,” Raiden mutters. “Caleb’s been called on a disciplinary hearing at the Eagle House.”

“What?”

“Nox Fucking Callahan complained about his behavior during the attack last night,” Raiden says in an angry tone. “He’s so full of bullshit. Caleb should be heading the investigation regarding the attack but he’s on the verge of being suspended.”

“Who the hell’s Nox Callahan?” I shout. “How can he get Caleb in so much trouble?”

“LieutenantNox Callahan,” Raiden says. “He has a rank over Caleb and is milking it for all it’s worth. And that’s not all that I’ve learned since being here. He was also the acting superior during the Black Widow terror attack three years ago.”
