“What?” My teeth clench together. Closing my eyes, I will myself to take deep breaths so that I don’t lose myself to the onslaught of horrible memories that I keep suppressed at all times. “How do you know that, Raiden?” I ask. “That information is supposed to be classified. Even I never knew.”

“Callahan is doing his best to become the leading officer in the investigations,” Raiden says. “That’s how we got to know how he’s related to the Black Widow case.”

“Black Widow?” I whisper hoarsely. “What’re you talking about?”

“One of the attackers was caught last night,” Raiden says in a grim voice. “Before anyone could proceed to interrogate him, the man swallowed a cyanide-laced candy. That’s what those Black Widow bastards do. They kill themselves before anyone can get any information out of them.”

“That’s the only thing that’s got you thinking about the organization?”

“No,” he continues in a grim tone. “I was there when they were performing the autopsy. He carried the mark of the spider on his chest. There’s no doubt to his connection with the Black Widow.”

My mind replays the events of the past.

Black Widow was a terrorist organization that plagued the country three years ago. My brothers and I made sure to get rid of their leader and as well as their headquarters. How could they be back again? How can they be so bold as to attack a building full of bureaucrats?

“Damon?” Raiden’s voice sounds low and anxious.

“Yeah. I’m still here.”

“Are you okay?”

I’m not sure that I am.

My brother recognizes my silence. “We’ll figure this out,” he says in a quiet tone. He exhales a heavy breath. “There’s something else I need to know. How’s Iris doing?”

“I don’t know.”

“What do you mean? You’ve been with her since last night. Is she okay?” There’s a desperation in his voice that I’ve never heard before.

“She’s safe,” I say.

“Thank fuck,” he breathes. “Damon, did you notice anything about her last night?”

His question jolts me. “What do you mean?” I say, wanting to know if he noticed her scent too.

“Iris’s scent...she’s never smelled like that before. Caleb caught it too. There’s something else too...” He hesitates.

“Yes?” I urge him.

“Could she be an omega?”

“Iris is right here. Come home and find out for yourself.”

“I want to do that so bad,” he groans. “I haven’t been able to stop thinking about her. If the situation down here wasn’t so bad, I’d be home right now.”

“Who’s interrogating Caleb?” I ask.

“Dad.”

“Fuck.” He’s going to be extra harsh on Caleb.

“That Callahan bastard insisted on Dad conducting the disciplinary meeting,” Raiden spits. “He’s doing this because we stopped him from forcing himself on Iris.”

The memory of him pinning her against a wall and licking her cheeks surfaces in my mind. Rage and intense hatred course through me, a deep instinct telling me I need to protect her against him.

“I’ll never let him touch her again,” I say through clenched teeth. “She’smine.”

“Damon...”
