I move toward the windows that take up an entire wall. Sliding the curtains away, I gaze out at the woods in the distance. The sun is shining brightly over the lush green grounds.

A smile comes to my lips.

This place is starting to feel like home.

I thought I’d lost everything when my parents abandoned me but Julian and his pack have erased most of the hurt I felt during my initial days here. There’s always someone accompanying me here. I’m never left to dwell on my misery.

I’ve never felt so protected and safe even when my family was around. I was always an afterthought to my parents. Their sole concern has always been reserved for my sister.

A sigh escapes me.

I lost a family that night but gained a pack.

I can’t even imagine there was a time when I hated Caleb and his brothers.

They’re my mates...The thought sends a rush of warmth through me. I can’t believe I’m being handed something so precious after a lifetime of neglect.

My stomach groans loudly, pulling me out of my thoughts. Looking down, I see that I’m wearing the same clothes as yesterday.

Feeling too lazy to go up to change, I use Caleb’s bathroom to freshen up.

Once I’m done, I make a beeline toward the kitchen.

My foot is almost at the door when I hear a voice that chills my blood.

“...hand her over to me,” Nox Callahan’s voice floats through the open doorway. “Cut your losses with your suspension Captain Solveig. The omegas in Winslow would kill to become a mate to you and your pack. Simply pick one.”

“You’ve got quite the nerve to make such a demand,” Damon’s voice spats.

Callahan chuckles and the sound makes the sparse hair on my arms rise. “Are you willing to lose everything for that insignificant girl? I’m happy to clear the debt her parents owe you. There’s no need to keep her close in hopes they’ll come back for her. I can make a payment right away.”

Fear grips my throat.

It’d been so easy for my parents to abandon me.

Caleb and his brothers claim to be my mates. I’ve never been as happy as the times I’ve spent with them. But am I worth a million dollars to them?

Heart throbbing against my throat, I strain my ears to hear Damon’s answer.

“Iris is worth more than you can ever pay us,” Raiden says in a cold tone.

“Stop insulting the Solveig pack, Lieutenant Callahan,” Caleb says in a firm tone. “We’ll never give up someone we’re protecting.”

“Iris isours,” Julian growls. “Keep your paws to yourself, you dirty old bastard.”

Stepping closer to the door, I peer in.

Caleb, Damon, Raiden, and Julian are gathered around the dining table but Callahan is nowhere in sight. That’s when I notice the phone lying on the table before them.

“You’ll regret your choice,” Callahan’s voice threatens.

Caleb, Damon, Raiden, and Julian look livid.

“Yeah? Fuck you too,” Damon growls and grabs the phone. He’s about to hurl it at the wall but Caleb stops him.

“Don’t break the damn phone,” Caleb mutters, prying the phone out of his brother’s hand. He taps the screen. “There. I disconnected the call.”

“Should’ve done it the moment the fucktard started speaking,” says Raiden, kicking a chair so hard, it topples and slides across the floor.
