I swallow as my heart gradually calms down.

They refused to give me up despite Callahan’s threats as well as his enticing monetary offer.

I want to feel happy about their acceptance but there’s a niggling fear that stops me from being relieved. If he can pay them over a million dollars in a matter of a heartbeat, he must be filthy rich too. Callahan must be powerful enough to be making such threats to a pack like the Solveigs.

“Iris, why’re you standing there?” Julian’s voice makes me look up.

I step forward and enter the kitchen.

The guys wipe their angry expressions at once.

“Who is Nox Callahan?” I ask them. “What does he want from me?”

Caleb glances at his brothers before meeting my gaze.

“He’s among the top leaders of our armed forces,” he says. “He has power but it’s not something that worries us. You shouldn’t let it concern you either.”

“But, why me?” I ask. “He’s powerful and rich. I’m just...me. Even my parents abandoned me. I didn’t even know I’m an omega a week ago. There’s nothing special about me.”

“You don’t see it but we do,” Julian says in a grim tone. “Callahan must’ve caught a whiff of your perfume that night. Bastards like him rarely get told no. He’s just throwing his weight around to get what he wants.”

“It’s creepy as hell,” I say, bringing my arms to hug myself.

Julian steps closer to me and pulls me into a hug.

I cling to him, my mind reliving the horrible moment when Callahan compelled me into submission. The ghost of his cold, slimy touch still lingers on my skin.

“Bite me,” I say in a muffled voice.

“What?”

I push him away and look up into his eyes. “You said you’re my mate. Bite me and make it clear to him. He wouldn’t think about touching me if we were mated. Right?”

A worried expression spreads over his beautiful face. He glances at the others and back at me.

“Come here, sweetheart,” he says, folding his arms around me again.

I stay in his hold, soaking in the warmth his body offered.

“There’s so much you don’t know about being an omega,” he says after a while. Taking a step back, he leads me toward the table. He straightens the chair Raiden kicked earlier and gestures toward it. “Have a seat.”

He kneels before me and captures my hand in his. “Only alphas bite during mating,” Julian explains in a low, gentle voice. “Even though you’re my mate, I won’t be biting you. Intimacy between us would be the same as it is between regular betas.”

I look toward Damon. “You’re an alpha.”

Damon’s eyes burn as he stares at me. “You want me to bite you?” he asks in an unusually husky voice.

I shrug. “Anything to keep that creep off me.”

“Fuck me,” he groans, running his fingers through his fiery red strands. “How the hell am I supposed to say no to her?”

“That’s not how mating works,” Raiden says in a gentle voice but there’s a hint of strain in his voice. “You have to be in heat for us to knot with you and give you the bite.”

“Why?”

“Your body changes when you go into heat,” Raiden explains. “An omega’s body experiences changes in hormones during those times. Your heat doesn’t just allow you to experience heightened sexual needs. Your body also has the ability to heal extremely fast.”

“An alpha’s body reacts to this change in your pheromones,” Caleb says. “Our bodies grow stronger in response as well. When we bite you, it’s not possible to know our own strengths. Our teeth break through skin and flesh, driving our saliva deep into your bloodstream. If you’re not in heat, an alpha’s bite can be quite dangerous. You could bleed out if we break a major artery.”
