“Alphas go out of control when they’re in the middle of knotting,” Damon says. “We wouldn’t even be aware if we hurt you.”

Julian squeezes my hand. “You don’t have to rush into anything just because Callahan’s threatening you. Your first knot should be special. There’ll be others but nothing like experiencing it the first time.”

Caleb moves closer to Julian and squeezes his shoulder. “He’s right.”

“We should visit a doctor soon,” says Raiden. “There’s so much you’ve been hiding from us, I feel worried.”

Julian meets my gaze and nods. “We should get some tests done to know if you need any kinds of supplements. I’ve personally never heard of anyone who’s been suppressed for as long as you. Your body is going through changes that happen gradually. Let’s make sure you’re okay as you go through them.”

Everything feels surreal right now.

No one’s ever looked at me with so much warmth and attention before.

My parents looked this way toward Delilah but never me.

Am I really lucky enough to be their mates? I ask myself again, still unable to believe it’s all real.

Damon gets a butterfly knife out of his pocket and starts playing with it by flicking it back and forth at blinding speed. He doesn’t even glance at the blade flashing by as he glances around at his brothers.

“We need to look into this guy,” he says in a low voice. “Callahan’s not just after Iris. He’s suspended you over some bullshit reason, suppressed leaking any information about the attack to the public, and he’s taken over the case regarding the Black Widow.”

I start. “Caleb is suspended?”

“Yeah,” says Raiden. “Callahan launched a complaint against him, accusing Caleb of attacking him. It’s utter bullshit. I hate that he got our dad involved in this shitty mess.”

“We need to find a way to get on the investigating team,” Damon says. “I won’t let those Spider bastards harm any more innocent lives.” His amber eyes burn with hatred.

“We’ll destroy them once and for all,” Caleb agrees. “They owe us for what they did to you.”

“Let’s go and talk to Dad,” Raiden says. “We’ll challenge him about the suspension.”

“It’s already done,” Caleb mutters.

“Nope,” says Raiden. “That’s not how shit works. You don’t roll over just because he commanded you. Ask him for the proof that Callahan submitted. If he’s accusing you, he must have proof. Let’s go see what the bastard has on you and fight it. This is a matter of our reputation as well.”

“But, it’s Dad,” Caleb insists.

“Exactly,” says Raiden. “Callahan knew what he was doing when he took the case to him. He knew manipulating Dad would turn us into obedient puppies.”

“I agree with him,” Damon speaks up. “Don’t be so compliant that others take you for a fool.”

A storm rages behind Caleb’s steely eyes. He’s conflicted about heeding his brothers’ advice and going against his dad’s command.

“We’ll never be able to handle the Black Widow case if you stay suspended,” Raiden reminds him.

That seems to help Caleb. His gaze clears up. He stares between his brothers and gives a nod. “Let’s do this.”

“That’s like our fucking leader,” Raiden shouts, slapping Caleb in the back.

Damon grins, his eyes shining.

Julian rolls his eyes. “It’s already afternoon,” he says, prodding the watch on his wrist. “You need to get goingnowif you want to make it to the headquarters in time.”

“Right,” says Raiden, striding toward Caleb. “We can make it in time if we leave now.”

Damon gets to his feet and moves toward them.

“Damon, wait,” says Caleb. “We might not make it back tonight. How about you stay back with them?”
