A bad feeling settles deep in my gut. What is happening? None of this could be a coincidence.

I hurry toward the house.

Grabbing the knob, I feel the door opening. Why isn’t this locked?

I step inside the darkened living room. Only a small lamp glows in the corner.

The dim illumination is enough for me to make out the dark shapes taking up the couches. Strange scents waft into my nostrils, freezing me on the spot.

The lights suddenly turn on, forcing me to squeeze my eyes shut against the abrupt brightness.

When my vision refocuses, I find the couches being taken up by several men in black combat uniforms. My anxiety rockets as I gaze at their unfamiliar faces.

“Who are you?” I whisper while my eyes dart around the room, searching for my family.

“Where are your parents, kid?” One of the men demands.

“What?”

“Where’s your sister?”

The urge to cry for Mom and Dad overwhelms me. Why did they allow these strange men inside our home?

The man who spoke first, stands up and stalks toward me.

I breathe in through my mouth, tasting the man’s scent. He’s a beta.

“Who are you?” I ask him as he moves closer.

“Answer me, first,” says the man in a grim tone. His face is lined with remnants of old scars. “Where did you hide your sister?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Don’t play games with us,” the man barks, making me jump. “We know you’re all hiding the omega.”

My eyes widen. What is this madness? Why are these strange men in our house, demanding to see Delilah?

He grabs my arm, pulling me against him. He comes close enough for me to feel his hot breath on my face. “Tell me, girl. Where are you hiding her?”

My knee lifts, hitting the man in the gut.

He lets out a gasp, loosening his hold on me immediately.

I step back, raising my fists. “Get out of my house or I’ll kick your asses.”

The beta I just kicked stares daggers at me. Glancing at his comrades, he commands. “Grab her.”

I make a quick count. More than twelve men are crowding the living room.

They all advance toward me at once.

Knowing there’s no way I can fight them all, I turn toward the staircase in the corner and head that way.

“Don’t let her get away,” the leader shouts.

My legs skip up the stairs. Reaching the top, I run inside my room.

The sound of pounding footsteps reaches me just as I lock the door.
