“I hate it when they do that,” I say.

“I understand you but we’re under attack right now,” Julian says, going back to his station. “The only way we’ll get out of this mess is if we let Damon lead us.”

“Aren’t you worried about him?” I ask as Julian pulls up a feed that shows a handful of our soldiers fighting a group of terrorists in a corner of the grounds.

“I am but it’s important to follow the directions of a commander in a battle,” he replies, watching the fight happening that shows our soldiers losing. “Battles are different from a one-on-one fight. You need to work as a team to take on your enemy. One weak link, one broken chain in commands, and you’ll find yourself surrounded.”

The few soldiers left alive are gunned down mercilessly. I never knew these men but it’s equally shocking to see them falling to the ground and staying motionless.

Julian puts on a pair of headphones and starts giving out codes along with locations.

I don’t dare interrupt him to ask whether he’s talking with Damon or someone else.

The situation in the other corners of the estate doesn’t look good either.

Several more explosions go off, shaking the roof over our heads.

It’s getting difficult to keep standing here without doing anything. I want to be out there, fighting with our men to protect Damon and Julian.

“Where’s Damon?” I ask after a while. My gaze darts around the monitors before me but I can’t spot him.

“He’s headed to the armory,” Julian says. “That’s the only place with a missile launcher in our base. It’s the only sure shot way to get rid of that helicopter.”

“Can’t they shoot it down?” I ask.

“Their men on the ground aren’t giving them enough time to aim at it,” Julian replies. “Damon wants to get rid of it so that they can have some upper hand over the Black Widow.”

My heart slams against my chest as I watch the battle taking place on the grounds. A part of me wonders how a terrorist organization could be as coordinated and powerfully armed as our forces.

“There he is,” Julian suddenly shouts. “Look here and...here.”

Julian zooms in on one of the screens.

Damon comes in clear view. He’s holding up a massive gun over his broad shoulder and aiming at the chopper flying over his head.

I watch with bated breath, my eyes wide with fear as a rain of bullets is showered on him.

Damon holds his ground and aims.

Next moment, we see a bright flare as he shoots.

The missile isn’t easy to follow because of the darkness but the impact it makes on the helicopter is bright and loud.

Damon hits his target successfully.

The sound of the massive explosion reaches us through the walls.

“Yes!” Julian punches the air, his face lighting up with victory.

Excitement surges through me as I watch the chopper turn into a raging ball of fire and smoke.

I start whooping but my elation is short-lived. The slam of doors from downstairs reaches my ears, jerking me back to my surroundings.

“What was that?” I ask.

Julian quickly types on his keyboard.

The feeds on the computer screens change instantly, now showing us glimpses of the rooms inside the mansion.
