I don’t care what happens to me.

I just know that I won’t be able to bear it if they got hurt.

All this time, I couldn’t fully believe that they’re my mates.

Only now, when they’re far from me, I feel the bond that stretches between me and them. It’s no simple crush or infatuation.

I feel the physical pull of the bond. Even if I can’t see what’s happening outside this room, a deep intuition tells me they’re both in danger.

I can neither breathe nor relax.

While I’m busy panicking, the sound of gunshots reaches me through the walls. They’re so much louder this time.

Heart thundering, I’m rooted to the spot.

“Julian!” My mind screams but no sound leaves my lips.

More shots are fired. From the sound of them, I’m sure they’re all coming from downstairs.

“Fuck this,” I mutter, tightening my hold on the gun. I can’t bear staying locked in here.

Making up my mind, I walk toward the door and aim the gun at the knob.

Two shots are all it takes for the door to swing open on its hinges.

Men’s shouts reach my ears as I steadily make my way through the corridor and down the stairs. Reaching the ground floor, I make sure my feet make no sound as I cautiously proceed through the empty halls.

There’s no one hanging around the kitchen anymore, so I make up my mind to check out the entrance hall.

“Stop being a creeper,” a voice sounds from the corridor leading into the entrance hall. “It’s not going to help you hide.”

An icy chill spreads through me at the sound of that voice. I’ve only heard it once in my life but it’s wedged into the darker spaces of my subconscious where my nightmares hide.

I move forward and come face to face with Nox Callahan.

An evil smirk spreads across his face, his black eyes shining with hidden malice.

“Are you going to shoot me, darling?” he asks, gesturing at the raised gun in my hand.

I want to kill this man, if only to rid myself of the nightmares he’s caused me over the past few days. Battling against my instincts, I lower my weapon.

Nox Callahan is an asshole but murdering him would make me a criminal. I can’t let Caleb and the others get into any more trouble because of me. Besides, he’s part of the military. Maybe he’s come to help us.

I lower my gun.

He strides toward me, that awful smirk still in place.

Moving close, he places his hand on my gun. “Let me keep this for you.” He’s smiling at me but also compelling me at the same time.

I grit my teeth against his dominance. “I’d like to keep it with me, thanks.”

His smile disappears instantly. With a sudden jerk, he pulls the gun out of my slackened grip.

“Guns and roses don’t go together,” he says, leering at me.

I disagree with him but bite my tongue to cut off my retort. “Did you see Julian?” I ask.

His thick black brow arches and his mouth thins. “Why worry about that omega?”
