Callahan chuckles. “I don’t know what you went through in your life to think the world will fall apart without your sacrifice. It’s time I showed you a different kind of world, a world where you’re the queen.”

“What the hell are you talking about? We’ve got to help Julian.” Before he can rein me back, I jog toward the place where he’s lying.

None of the men stop me.

Kneeling beside him, I gently shake his shoulders. Tears stream down my face while my heart crumbles from the shock of seeing him like this.

“Julian,” I call out.

A breathy groan escapes his lips. He shifts and turns so that he can lie on his back.

When he does, I see the full extent of his injuries.

His forehead is profusely bleeding. His shirt is torn in places and I can see the bruises that are marring his body. His brows crunch together but he’s in so much pain, that he can barely open his eyes.

Hard fingers grip my shoulder and pull me up.

“Let me go,” I shout.

“Behave!” Callahan hisses his command.

It’s a struggle to fight against him with my bound wrists but I don’t give up. I headbutt him hard in the chest.

“I’ll enjoy breaking your resistance,” he says with a dark chuckle as he grabs a handful of my hair.

“Let go of me,” I shout, tears pricking my eyes. “You’re an asshole but aren’t you one of the good guys? Why are you doing this? Why aren’t you helping Julian?”

“I’m a sheep in a wolf’s clothing,” he says, grabbing my arm and leading me away from Julian and the men who surround him.

“You have no honor,” I say, seething. “How can you surrender to the Black Widow?”

He comes to a halt and turns those black, bottomless eyes on me. “Darling, I’ll tell you a secret.” Leaning in, he presses his nose against the skin of my neck. “Iamthe Black Widow.”

Pain suddenly flares across my skin. A second later, I realize he’s sunk his teeth into my tender flesh.

“Get off!” I scream, struggling. “What’re you talking about?” I ask. “How are you related to the Black Widow?”

“I. Am. The. Black. Widow.”

His words sink into my mind despite my denial.

I blink, tears running freely down my cheeks. “You’re the one who brought these terrorists into my home?”

“Please, honey. This isn’t your home.Iam your home.”

“What?”

Moving closer, he pulls me against him. “Walk.” He unleashes his dominance, forcing me to walk alongside him as he leads me up a staircase.

“I don’t understand,” I say in a choked, halting voice. “Why’re you doing this?”

“Be patient,” he says. “There’s all the time in the world for you to understand who you are. You’ll know what I have done to find you and make you mine.Mate.”

The word sends an icy chill through me. “I’m not your mate.”

“I’ll be there to claim your first heat,” he says, his nostrils flaring. “With the way you’re perfuming, I’m sure you’ll be ready soon. I can barely control myself around you but I’ll hold on until the day arrives.”

“You’re not my mate. I’ll never accept you.”
