Several fists pummel the door. “Get out here!” male voices shout at me.

Fear flows through my veins like ice water. Why are these strangers here? Why do they want Delilah?

My mind conjures up this morning’s conversation with my parents. They’d all been acting strangely. Something must’ve happened to them at the academy last night.

Shit, Iris, I curse at myself for not being with them the whole time they were there.

The way the men are pounding the door, I’m scared the whole thing would collapse anytime soon. I look around the room, searching for a weapon. There was no way I could let these men take me away.

“Open up!”

“It’ll be worse for you if you don’t!”

“Open the goddamn door!”

My fingers close over a small crystal trophy shaped like a star. Delilah and I won it at a children’s singing competition when I was five.

Delilah was always winning prizes for her singing and dancing, so she let me keep this one after she ran out of space in her own room.

Focus, Iris, I tell myself, curling my fingers around the star-shaped trophy.

The object felt heavy in my hand. It had the potential to hurt someone if I threw it hard enough.

“What’s going on?” A different voice speaks over the men’s shouts.

I still at the cold calmness in that voice.

The men grow quiet on the other side of the door. Before I can understand what’s happening, I hear the distinct whir of an electric saw.

The high-pitched sound of cutting metal erupts right outside the door. I stare at it, my eyes wide open with terror.

Stupid, I scold myself. Why did I have to run into my room and lock myself here? They’ll grab me the moment they open that door.

My fingers tighten around the crystal trophy. They won’t take me without a fight, I vow. I’m going to give them hell before letting them catch me.

I’m ready when the door swings open. My hand is already raised high. The moment someone steps in, I chuck the star-shaped crystal at him.

The trophy hits a tall man in the forehead and clatters to the floor. I blink, suddenly jittery at the sight of the alpha who steps forward.

His eyes glow amber with cold rage. Flaming red strands fall over his eyes but don’t diminish the fire in them. A thin stream of crimson streams down the side of his cruel, beautiful face.

The dominance rolling off him bends my will to fight.

He’s dressed in the same black combat uniform as the rest of the men but he easily stands out as their leader.

Several men fan out from behind him. My room feels too small as they crowd me in.

I look into the eyes of the alpha commander and wait for the order to be shot dead right away.

“Bring her downstairs,” he directs in a surprisingly calm tone. Turning around, he stalks out of the room.

I suddenly realize I’m able to breathe again.

Drawing in a lungful of air, I tighten my fists. The men crowd in, assuming I’ve been bullied into submission.

The moment one of them closes in, I strike out with a hard punch. My fist hits him in the nose. A resounding crack tells me I’ve managed to break his bone.

“Bitch!” he howls, clutching at his nose.
