“I’m going to carve your pretty face up,” Garcia threatens. “Everyone will know what you are. You will carry the mark of a slave for as long as you live.”

I struggle against him but my body’s close to shutting down. There’s barely any strength left in me.

The knife flashes as he raises it high.

No one is coming to save you, a cold voice whispers in my head. I squeeze my eyes shut, too terrified to see the knife sinking into my skin.

My eyes blink against the bright sunshine streaming in through the open curtains. I groan, pulling the covers over my eyes but sleep eludes me.

A sigh escapes me as I sit up and push back a lock of hair out of my eyes.

The bed beside me is empty. I told Raiden to rest last night but as usual, he’s gone to train at dawn.

A yawn escapes me as I climb out of bed and head out of the room.

The hallway is quiet but I hear a distant swing of a door closing.

Melancholy washes over me as I make my way downstairs. It’s always quiet and lonely in the mornings. Caleb has gone to his usual meetings at the military headquarters, Raiden is out in the training ground, and Damon is either training or torturing an enemy spy in the basement.

I look forward to the evenings from the moment I wake up. That’s when my mates return home. There are times when they don’t return at all, so I hope it’s not going to be one of those lonely days.

Heading into the kitchen, I find a flask of brewed coffee. My hand touches the glass. It’s no longer warm.

I pour the coffee into a mug without reheating it and head to my sanctuary.

I walk inside the tech room that Caleb helped me build. My desktop area boasts three LCD screens and a state-of-the-art multimedia system. Several monitors display live feeds from the surveillance cameras set up all around the mansion and the estate.

Most days, I enjoy working on codes for the game I’m developing, but this morning, all my thoughts seem to be pulled toward the strange young woman I met last night.

“Iris,” her name sounds so damn sweet on my tongue.

Her face comes alive in my mind, reigniting the memory of the first moment I laid eyes on her. Dressed in an overlarge plaid shirt and ripped jeans, she looked like an ordinary beta teen but the fire in her jewel-like green eyes made her unforgettable.

She stood like a wildflower against a storm as she faced Caleb, Raiden, and Damon. The young lady has an iron spine for being able to talk back to them when they were exuding their alpha dominance all over her.

“I won’t ever let you touch my sister!”Iris’s voice sounds in my head, reminding me how bravely she accused us of trying to steal her omega sister.

I chuckle.

Iris has more courage than the big military men who’re stationed on this estate. They’re all twice her size but cower at a glance from my mates.

My thoughts go to Damon.

I’d seen a spark in his amber-hued eyes that seemed to have been lost over the past couple of years. Iris made his forehead bleed and bruised his shin, but he was walking around with a grin on his face.

He didn’t even want me cleaning up his wound. It’s like he wanted to wear the bruise on his forehead like a fucking ornament.

Iris may be ordinary but she had an extraordinary effect on my mates.

I could tell Damon and Raiden were impressed by her for fighting off the men trained by them. They both recognized her courage and skills. It was only Caleb who was too angry at her parent’s betrayal to see through her heart.

Instead of sitting at my workstation, I move toward the surveillance screens. Caleb sent her to work in the trainee dorms, so I want to see how she’s coping with her new job.

“What are you up to this morning, my pretty little wildflower?” I murmur, flicking through the feeds of the building.
