I stop and enlarge the screen of the mess hall.

Iris is in the corner, mopping the floor with her head bowed.

I zoom in to take a closer look at her.

My heart hurts at the lost expression on her face. Her gait is slow and heavy, like she’s too exhausted but still exerting herself to work.

I think about the things Damon told me last night. They grabbed her just as she returned home from her job at the restaurant. She was probably already tired and hungry before she had to fight against the horde sent to bring her here.

Didn’t they give her anything to eat before making her work?

My frown deepens as I see Alistair barking at the poor girl and snatching her mop away. He thrusts a napkin in her hand and gestures toward a table in the corner.

She shuffles over there and starts cleaning up the mess on the table when Garcia purposely upturns his bowl of cereal. A second guy drops all his scrambled eggs on the floor.

“Shit!” I mutter, moving closer to the screen. “They’re bullying her.”

Iris’s droopy, sad expression transforms into one of rage and recklessness as they heckle at her like a gang of hyenas.

Garcia doesn’t give up and grabs her hair.

My fist lands hard on the desk before me. How dare he try to hurt her?

Hot anger sparks inside me as Iris’s face screws into an expression of pain.

I hate military guys like Garcia. Just because they’re trained to fight and fire guns, they think they’re better than everyone else, that being part of the Solveig Pack gives them the right to treat others like shit.

Men like Garcia have overblown egos. I bet he’s trying to hurt her to pay her back for injuring him last night.

It’s his fault for not being able to fight against her, and now, he’s gathering his buddies to gang up on her.

Iris elbows Garcia in the neck and kicks back, making him stumble backward.

My smile at her retaliation doesn’t last long though.

The other men throw themselves into the fight.

Iris holds on her own for a while but I can see her exhaustion creeping in. Sweat drips down her brows and she’s panting for air.

Within minutes, they beat her to the ground.

My anxiety skyrockets as I watch her curl into herself. Garcia and his friends have no mercy for the lone young woman. They use her vulnerability and start kicking her while she’s on the ground.

I push my chair back and stand up.

“Hey, Jules,” a familiar voice speaks my name but I can’t respond back. “Julian?” I recognize Raiden’s voice behind me. He touches my shoulder and instantly realizes how stiff I am. “Hey, what’s going on?”

“They’re hurting her.”

“What? Who’s hurting who?”

“Iris. Look.” Grabbing him, I make him stand before the screen to see what’s happening in the mess hall.

“What the fuck are they doing?” A growl deepens my mate’s voice. “Why’re they hurting her?”

“They started bullying her the second they saw her,” I say.

“The fuck—” I see what he’s cursing about.
