I’m used to people wanting to get close to me to sniff my scent or touch me but Iris’s sole intention was to comfort me. Her touch wasn’t greedy or repulsive.

I playfully pat her head and move toward the fridge to get her some food.

“Julian...I’m sorry,” she calls out again.

A smile comes to my lips as I take out a carton of cut-up pineapples. I go back to the table and hand her a fork.

“Stop being silly,” I say. “I went to get you some food.”

“Oh.”

“Eat this and I’ll make you some breakfast.”

The color on her cheeks deepens. “You don’t have to do that. You’ve done enough already.”

“Aren’t you hungry?”

“No.” The quick lie is exposed the moment her stomach groans loudly.

I laugh as she clutches at her belly.

Iris is so cute! I haven’t had so much fun with someone in a long, long time.

“Eat,” I tell her.

She casts furtively glances at me while devouring the pieces of pineapple. It looks like she’s been starving since last night.

I feel another pinch deep inside me. The omega traders who took me had starved me and the other children as well. The weaker we were, the less likely we were to run and escape.

Iris’s pain is triggering the memories I’d suppressed a long time ago.

Going to the fridge, I open it again.

I’m a lazy ass when it comes to cooking for myself, but I’m going to make an effort for her. Grabbing bread, eggs, bacon, and a carton of juice, I set out to make breakfast.

The kitchen is soon filled with the sound of sizzling bacon and eggs. My stomach starts growling at the delicious smells and I can’t wait to dig in myself.

I plate up the food and take it to the table.

Iris stares at the fried eggs and bacon with a starving look. Her expression reminds me of the time when Caleb’s father brought me home and gave me my first proper meal after rescuing me from the omega traders.

I’d been starving but was too afraid to expect the food was for me.

“Go on,” I say, sliding a plate toward her. “Eat as much as you want.”

“Really?”

“Yeah.” To erase her hesitation, I load up her plate with food and fill up a glass with orange juice.

She sits still until I’ve arranged her food for her.

“Dig in,” I say.

The moment the words leave my lips, she attacks the food. Tearing off a chunk of bread, she stuffs it into her mouth. She’s still chewing the bread but doesn’t wait to shove a whole egg in.

I watch her half-amused and half-worried. To my surprise, she continues to devour the food without choking. In between, she takes deep swigs of the juice.

A strange emotion washes over me. I want to protect this young woman. Other than my mates, I’ve never felt this protective over anyone.
