A sigh escapes me.

I don’t need to be a psychic to know what the rest of the evening will be like.

“Wait,” I call a passing valet.

The man turns toward me, his expression falling the moment he sees me. “What do you want?”

“These car keys belong to Mr. David Collins,” I say, holding up the keys.

“Who’s that?” he asks suspiciously.

“Miss Delilah Collins’s father,” I say.

A look of recognition flits through his eyes. “Sure. I’ll hand them to him.” He readily grabs the keys from me and walks away.

Knowing no one’s going to miss me, I take the bouquet with me and head out of the hall.

My phone vibrates in my pocket as I walk out of the exit door. Taking it out, I check the screen.

Ethan, my best friend and boss, is calling me. A smile comes to my lips. Swiping the screen, I press the phone to my ear. “Hey, what’s up?” I greet.

“Are you still at the omega academy?” he asks.

“I’m about to leave,” I say.

“Thank fuck. Can you swing by the restaurant now?”

“Sure. But, why?”

“I’m working on a new recipe. You need to come and taste it asap. I can’t decide if I should scrap it or put it on the menu.”

“I’m sure it’s delicious,” I say, rolling my eyes. Ethan is an excellent chef but he struggles against imposter syndrome.

“Please?” he urges.

“Do I get paid overtime?” I joke.

“Fine,” he readily agrees.

I laugh. “I’m kidding. You’re so hopeless.” Switching off the call, I open the app for a cab service.

Luckily, my cab arrives within ten minutes.

I settle in the backseat and watch the city streets pass by. Skyscrapers dot the city’s skyline, most of them belonging to tech companies.

Ethan and I graduated high school together last year.

He’s an alpha but not as affluent as those who’re attending the banquet at the academy tonight.

Ethan took over his grandfather’s restaurant last year. He’s naturally talented when it comes to running the business but he’s always obsessing with adding his own personal touch to the menu.

Ethan employed me as a waitress at his restaurant.

The pay is good and the restaurant’s close to my home. My boss is my best friend, making it the ideal job for me to earn some money for college.

The cab drops me in front of La Cocina. It’s close to eleven, so the restaurant is closed to patrons.

I walk in through the entrance in the back alley and enter the space where Rob and Nancy are busy doing the dishes.
