The thought jolts me out of my panic-stricken mind.

Iris belongs to me. I stole her from her home, brought her here, and kept her caged in my house.

I’m responsible for her well-being. I’m her alpha.

Leaning in, I slip my arms under her thighs and lift her.

“What are you doing?” she mutters through her pain.

“I’m taking you to the ER.”

Iris weighs as much as a fucking feather. Weren’t we feeding her anything?

I hurry to the underground garage where my car’s parked.

I place her in the front passenger seat and pull the seatbelt around her. My nose sniffs her instinctively but comes away with nothing. Iris oddly has no scent.

She can barely sit still as I take my place behind the wheel.

Her groans send waves of cold through me. What could’ve happened to her?

Would Julian ever forgive me if something happens to her? Would he believe me if I told him I wasn’t responsible for this?

“Get me a painkiller,” she says in a weak voice from my side as I step on the gas. “Please...I feel like I’m going to die. It hurts too much.”

“I’m taking you to the hospital. Just hang on a little longer.”

The Sunday traffic is mercifully light, allowing me to close the distance between my estate and the hospital downtown.

Iris whimpers softly, begging me to get her a painkiller.

I want to ease her pain but don’t want to risk giving her something that can exacerbate her symptoms. “The doctors will give you anything you want,” I say, trying to coax her.

A heavy breath escapes me when I finally pull the car into the hospital’s parking lot.

Climbing out, I open the door to Iris’s side.

She tries to climb out but I don’t wait for her to make the effort. Taking off her seat belt, I haul her into my arms.

Knowing my way around the hospital, I run toward the ER unit, shouting for a doctor.

Two nurses rush toward me.

“She’s suffering from intense stomach cramps,” I tell them. “Where can I take her? Where’s the doctor?”

A male nurse comes toward me with a wheelchair. “Please, place her here. We’ll get someone to look in on her as soon as possible.”

I hesitate. A part of me doesn’t want to let go of her.

“Please, Sir,” the male nurse insists.

Fighting against my instincts, I put her down.

The male nurse wheels her away while the two female nurses stop me from pursuing them. “Please, Sir. You need to fill up some forms.”

“Is she going to be okay?”

“One of our on-call doctors will look after her,” one of the women tells me. “You can help by filling up the forms for us.” She gestures toward the reception area. “This way, please.”
