“My friend?”

“Mr. Solveig. He’s the one who brought you in.”

I’d forgotten all about Caleb.

“Does he know what happened to me?” I ask.

“Not yet. I wanted to check on you before letting you have visitors. Are you in any pain, Miss Collins?”

“No. I feel fine.”

“That’s good,” she says with a nod. “You might experience some cramps now and then, but they wouldn’t be as painful as the ones you went through today.”

“Can I ask you to keep my condition a secret from him?”

She gives a nod. “You have the right to privacy.”

My eyes close in utter relief.

There’s no way Caleb can know I’m an omega. What if he tries to use me as a surrogate in Delilah’s place?

I’ve never given any serious thought to having babies. Heck! I didn’t even have the time to date anyone.

Either way, there’s no way I can be a surrogate. I can never give up something as precious as a baby that grew inside me. My hands come to rest protectively over my stomach.

Did my parents plan this all out? Did they give me up to the Solveig Pack to make up for their debt?

A painful choke makes it difficult to breathe. How could they betray me like this? Did they never think of me as their daughter?

I swallow hard and test my voice. “How long do I have before I awaken?”

“It will happen soon. Either this week or the next.” She smiles at me. “You’ll undergo emotional changes along with physical changes. Be ready for them.”

“What physical changes?”

“Your boobs will grow bigger,” she explains, grinning. “Your skin and hair will grow lustrous. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the changes, Miss Collins.”

“Can I keep taking those pills to suppress the hormonal changes?”

Dr. Lawson glares at me. “You’ll cause irreparable damage if you consume them again.”

“How bad would it be?”

“Kidney and liver failure from the reaction with the drugs I gave you,” she says in a grim tone. “You could die. Youmuststay away from them for at least a year.”

Fuck.

“I’m not ready to face this,” I say, letting her see through my desperation. “Isn’t there a way to delay my awakening?”

She shakes her head. “You saw what your hormones did to you today. You’re already way past the time of your awakening. If you resist any longer, you’ll die. You cannot stop the changes happening in your body.”

“Is there nothing out there that can help me?”

“If you want time to adjust before others know, you can use a de-scenter. That’ll mask your perfume effectively for a few hours. Keep a can handy whenever you’re stepping outside or meeting your friends. It’s the only safe option.”

I nod, agreeing with her.

“How old are you, Miss Collins?”
