She stares up at me and I can see my reflection in those big green eyes. “If you think that, will you let me go home?”

“Not yet,” I say, hating myself as my guilt grows heavier. “While I can’t let you leave just yet, I’ll make sure you’re safe in Solveig Mansion.”

“There’s something I need that’s kept at home,” she says.

“I’ll ask someone to get it for you.”

She shakes her head. “It has to be me.”

“Why?”

Her teeth sink into her bottom lip. Tears spring to her eyes but she doesn’t let them fall.

And that makes me feel like a bigger ass.

The doctor told me not to stress her out and here I was making her fucking cry.

“If you can just tell me what’s wrong with you,” I say in a gentle voice.

“It’s...lady stuff.”

“Lady stuff?”

“It’s something to do with my periods,” Iris says in a cautious tone. “It’s personal.”

“And whatever’s at home will help you?”

She nods.

“Fine,” I say with a deep exhale. “I’ll take you home.”

“Really?” Her eyes light up at once.

Warmth steals through me at the excited look on her face. “Yeah. Come on.”

Straightening up, she joins me as I walk out of the room.

Relief floods through me as we cross the stark hallways of the ER unit. When I brought her in, she was barely hanging on. I can still feel the dampness of her tears on my shirt.

I’m lucky Dr. Lawson was able to treat her so fast. It’s only been three hours since we got here and Iris is walking with perfect ease. There’s no semblance of pain in her expression.

A fierce protectiveness bubbles inside me. I’ve never felt this way about anyone except Julian.

Glancing down at the woman beside me, I wonder why she’s having this effect on me.Iris is an odd beta, I realize.

Reaching the parking lot, I wait for her to climb into the front passenger seat. Once she’s settled, I lean in to clasp the seatbelt.

Iris’s cheeks are a healthy pink as she meets my gaze.

A smile teases the corner of my lips. I like that she’s reacting the same way to me as my brothers. My nose sniffs at her, trying to steal a whiff of her scent. Oddly, she has no scent, not even a faint trace.

Walking around the car, I climb in, and drive the car out of the parking area.

“What if my parents are there?” she asks as the car moves into traffic.

“They’re not home,” I say. “My men are watching the house. I’ll know the moment they show up.”

“Oh.” Disappointment floods her face.
