Julian and I should be enough to soothe her heartache. Hell! Even Raiden and Damon can take care of her. I just don’t want a stranger touching her.

My instincts drive me forward.

Moving close to Iris, I grab her shoulder and wrench her away from Ethan.

Iris doesn’t even realize what I’ve done as she continues to sob. Her tears seem to have blinded her to everything around her. Sagging against me, she fists my shirt and buries her head in my chest.

My arm wraps around her, pulling her against me.

“Who the hell are you?” The stranger growls, slamming me with a hit of dominance.

My arms tighten around Iris as I stand my ground.

Looking over her head, I meet the young man’s fiery gaze. “Back off,” I hiss, knocking him back with a surge of my dominance.

A hint of satisfaction flickers through me. The young stranger stumbles a step back. He’s an alpha too but the force of my compulsion overshadows his.

Iris stirs.

Pushing off me, she looks up at me. Confusion flickers through her eyes as if she’d been expecting someone else. Turning around, she sees the strange alpha.

“Ethan,” she calls out.

My fingers tighten on her wrist, making sure she doesn’t go back to him.

“What are you doing here?” she asks, not making a move to go to him.

“I’ve been coming to check on the house every single day since you and your family disappeared,” he says. “Where the hell have you been? And who is this guy?”

Iris glances at me before facing him. “I’m sorry I couldn’t contact you,” she says in a low voice. “I lost my phone.”

“I know,” he says. “I found it here.” Digging in his backpack, he brings out a phone. “Don’t lose it again.”

She takes the phone. “Thanks.”

“Who’s this man with you?” he asks, glaring at me. “Is he the one responsible for what’s happened to your family?”

“No. My parents are responsible for everything that happened,” she says in a dead tone. “This is Caleb,” she says, gesturing toward me. “I work for him now.”

“What? Why?”

She shakes her head. “I can’t explain that. And it’s best you don’t know. I don’t want you getting involved in this mess.”

Ethan steps closer and reaches out to grab her.

I’m faster and pull Iris behind me. “Don’t touch her,” I snarl.

“She’s mine,” he barks.

“No. She’smine.” Fierce dominance rolls over me, slamming the younger alpha back.

“Iris,” he calls through gritted teeth.

She walks out from behind me. “There’s no use in fighting,” she says. “Caleb’s not a bad person. It’s my parents who’ve cheated him. I’m just trying to make things right.”

Ethan’s expression hardens. “You say they’ve cheated this man. They did it for Delilah, didn’t they?”

Iris cringes.
