“Yep. I knew it,” says Ethan. “They’ll bend backward for that good-for-nothing omega but will leave you behind to pay for their mistakes. Why, Iris? Why do you still have to do this? They’re not worth it.”

I hate this man trying to lay claim over her but I agree with him a hundred percent. Iris doesn’t need her parent’s sin to weigh her down. They’re assholes who don’t deserve a daughter like her.

“Don’t worry about me,” she says, forcing a smile. “I’ll figure something out.”

“Iris?” I gently call her name.

She glances up at me. “I’m almost done here,” she says. “I just need to pick up a few things from my room. May I?”

“Sure. Do you need any help?” I offer.

She shakes her head. “I’ll be right back.” Walking toward the staircase in the corner, she quickly takes the stairs and reaches upstairs.

“Who are you?” Ethan asks in a low, grim tone when she’s gone.

“I’m Caleb Solveig.”

“Solveig?” Confusion flickers through his eyes. “Are you related to the famous military family?”

I nod. “I’m the current pack leader.”

His features are etched with surprise. “Can you explain what’s happening here? Please?”

“Iris doesn’t want you getting involved,” I say in a grim tone. “She’s wise to let things be that way.”

“You can’t do this,” he says in a pained voice. “Iris is my best friend. We’ve been together since we were children. She’s a good person.” His voice catches as he swallows hard. “She shouldn’t be punished for what her parents did. Whatever they did, I’m willing to help make things better.”

I shake my head. “You can’t.” Even if he offers me the money Iris’s parents owe me, I’m still unwilling to let her go. There’s something between us that I’m still trying to unravel.

It’s only been a day since I came in contact with her and I’m already a jealous, possessive animal over her. I need more time to understand what ties me and my pack to her.

Iris’s footsteps sound louder. Next second, she appears on the staircase.

I notice a backpack that’s slung over her shoulders. “I’m done here,” she says, meeting my gaze. “We can go home now.”

I nod as she comes to stand beside me. Wrapping an arm around her shoulders, I steer her toward the door.

“Iris!” Ethan shouts as we reach the door.

“Bye,” she says, glancing back at him. “I’ll miss you.” A sad smile comes to her lips as she waves at him.

Tightening my hold on her, I guide her out of the house. The quicker I get her away from Ethan, the better I’ll feel. They may be childhood friends but I have no intention of letting her get close to him again.

Yep. I’ve gone rogue alpha over the young woman at my side.

My breathing turns normal when Iris is safely strapped to the seat beside me and the car has left the suburban street.

My gaze flickers toward her.

Iris sits quietly, watching the streets pass by. Is she missing that guy? Is she wishing she’d let him fight for her? Was their relationship deeper than casual friendship?

Ethan is an alpha who’s powerfully attracted to her. It’s hard for a regular beta to resist the protection of an alpha. Is she regretting leaving him behind?

“Who was that?” I ask, unable to hold myself back anymore.

“That was Ethan. He’s my best friend and my former boss.”

I process that. Best friend and boss? The guy essentially chained her to him since they were young.
