Iris is damn cute. Her struggle to hide her reaction is amusing to watch. Her shyness makes me want to keep teasing her.

All of a sudden, I don’t want to go home anymore. I want to keep her with me longer.

Iris

My disappointment is real when I’ve scooped the last bit of ice cream and fudge from my bowl. The sundae was delicious and Caleb’s company made it taste ten times better.

Caleb’s presence is the only thing keeping my mind off Dr. Lawson’s unsettling revelation. The trip to my home sealed the deal on the doctor’s diagnosis. Her opinion was a hundred percent correct.

After checking the bottles of vitamin meds Mom kept under the kitchen counters, I realized they all contained O-pills and a variety of suppressors.

Mom cleaned out the actual vitamin pills and refilled the bottles with O-pills.

Each pink tablet was embossed with a logo resembling a large O and a crown atop it. The mark was enough for me to distinguish them from the brand name plastered over the bottles.

My heart shattered at my parents’ betrayal.

They kept me from being revealed as an omega. Did they love their eldest daughter so much that there was nothing left for me?

Seeing Ethan soon afterward played havoc with my raw emotions. Seeing his familiar face made my wounds throb worse.

Ethan always pointed out Mom and Dad’s bias when it came to Delilah. I never listened to him because deep inside, I believed my family loved me.

My eyes were so blinded with tears I didn’t even realize the moment when Caleb took me in his arms. All I noticed was a rush of warmth that helped me calm down.

At first, I thought it was the effect of being hugged by my best friend. My assumption was shattered the moment I looked up into Caleb’s silvery eyes. This close to him, I could smell his scent.

He smelled like rain and thunder.

Closing my eyes, I could almost imagine myself in a lush forest with the scent of rain and wet earth mingling together. Inhaling deeply, I let his pheromones take over my senses.

Ethan wanted me to go with him but I refused.

A part of me was tempted by his offer but I resisted. Ethan didn’t need to be dragged into this mess. He was still building up his reputation as a chef and I didn’t want him to compromise his career for my sake.

Caleb’s reaction also confirmed my choice.

He didn’t want me to leave with Ethan. He still hoped that my parents would come back for me.

I wish I could tell him he’s wasting his time by keeping me close.

My parents never cared enough about me. They’d never jeopardize Delilah’s happiness to come to my rescue.

Exhaling a long breath, I look toward Caleb.

He’s finishing the last bit of his sundae. His dark hair falls over his face as he bends over the bowl. He looks amazingly handsome without a frown etched on his face.

A smile comes onto my lips.

Caleb isn’t so bad, after all.

Despite his threats and roughness, he’s extremely protective.

He hadn’t wasted any time when he found me writhing on the kitchen floor. Scooping me up in his arms, he’d carried me to his car, and then driven me to the hospital.

The memory of that awful pain is enough to bring on a cold sweat.
