Caleb could’ve let me suffer. He could’ve thought of it as karma for my parent’s deeds.

Instead, he’s here with me, making sure I’m all right. No wonder he’s Julian’s mate, I realize with a start. Julian would never fall in love with someone with an evil heart.

Caleb is good. He behaved rudely with me solely because he couldn’t forget the way my parents cheated him.

“Iris?” Caleb’s voice pulls me out of my thoughts. When I gaze up at him, he asks, “Are you done?”

I look at my nearly clean bowl.

A part of me wants to spend more time with Caleb. Being close to him has shown me a different side of him and I want to learn more.

A sigh escapes me. “Yeah. I’m done.”

An amused grin comes over his lips. “You don’t want to go home yet?”

“It’s nice to be here.”

He nods slowly. “That’s true but if we stay out any longer, Julian will murder me.”

“What?”

He brings out his phone and shows me the screen. “He’s been sending these threatening messages to me all evening. He wants you home right now.”

I stare at Caleb’s smiling face. He looks fucking divine. How did I miss his beautiful looks until now?

You often hear about alphas mistreating their omegas and betas. It’s so easy to abuse your power and status, but Caleb’s not like that at all. Julian’s messages are proof of that.

Julian is cursing nonstop in the messages. Reading them makes me chuckle.

“How long ago did he start texting you?” I ask, returning Caleb’s phone.

“A couple of hours ago,” Caleb replies. “He came home and didn’t find us there. The guards told him they saw me driving you somewhere. So, he did his own investigation. The surveillance feeds showed him what happened. He’s very worried about you.”

“Didn’t you tell him I’m okay?”

“He wants to see you to believe that.”

Warmth surges through me. Suddenly, I can’t wait to go home and see Julian.

I rise from my chair. “Should we take some ice cream home with us? You know, to sweeten his mood.”

A deep chuckle rumbles in his chest. I like that sound very much.

“That’s smart of you,” he says, getting to his feet. “Sweet treats are the way to his heart.” Coming closer, he wraps an arm around me, and sweeps me toward the counter.

I instinctively breathe in a lungful of his scent.

Caleb pays for our food while I stay wrapped in his warm embrace. He leads me out of the café after we’ve been given a bag of different flavored ice creams.

“Let me carry that,” Caleb says as we walk to his car.

“It’s not heavy at all.”

“Still. Doc said you need rest.”

“I feel fine.”

“What if the pain comes back?”
