“I’m just a beta,” I say with a nervous chuckle. “No one’s going to want me.”

The guys stare at each other and then back at me.

“You’re to stay in our sight too,” Caleb says in the same authoritative tone. “The place is going to be full of alphas. They’re not the ones to refuse prey if it comes to them. A beta as ...” he pauses, probably trying to find the right words. “...as young as you can bait them too.”

“Won’t there be omegas?” I ask. “Why would anyone care to look at me when there are pretty omegas all around them?”

“They’d be masking their scents,” says Julian. “I’ve done the same. Who wants to bother with some panting, growling alpha asshole? It’s best to conceal ourselves. No one would be able to guess if someone’s a beta or an omega tonight. That’s why. You should stay on your guard.”

I give a nod. “No worries. I’ll kick them in the nuts if they try anything with me.”

“They’re alphas, Wildcat,” says Damon. “Your claws wouldn’t be enough to keep them at bay if they’ve decided to eat you.”

A cold shiver runs down my spine.

It’s true. If an alpha has marked you, it’s nearly impossible to win against him in a fight.

Staying with Caleb, Damon and Raiden nearly made me forget about our power dynamics. The only time I experienced one of them using their true alpha dominance was the time Raiden pulled me away from the soldiers hurting me.

I realize how lucky I’ve been to end up among them. I’d be seriously fucked if Mom and Dad took money from any other pack.

I’m worried about one thing only. Will they continue to treat me this way when they know of my secret?

The car slows down and lines up behind a fleet of vehicles that are slowly entering through the massive gates of Governor Rye’s estate. Peering out of the window, I catch a glimpse of the grand mansion rising against the night sky.

My anticipation spikes. Julian kept getting me excited by talking about the dancing, live music, and the wonderful food at gatherings like these.

I’ve never been to a party as fancy as this before, so my excitement is tinged with nervousness. Delilah never liked me attending the grand parties at the omega academy but it was mostly because I never had proper clothes.

Things are different this time.

My dark crimson gown screams luxury. Beauticians from one of the most reputed cosmetics brands did my hair and makeup. Tonight, my looks could rival my sister’s.

The thought fills me with sadness. I still miss Delilah and my parents.

Don’t think about them tonight, I tell myself as the car comes to a stop.

One of the waiting valets moves forward and opens the door for us.

I take a deep breath as everyone starts climbing out of the car.

Securing the skirt of my dress, I slowly climb out.

Julian is right there, his hand extended toward me. He’s definitely my prince.

I take his hand and straighten up.

Camera flashes nearly blind me next second. I hadn’t noticed the group of reporters who crowded behind a barrier in the far corner. They click away at us like crazy, nearly dazzling me.

“Is that your new mate, Mr. Solveig?” someone shouts.

“What’s the omega’s name?” others shout.

My heartbeat picks up at being called an omega. No one knows your secret, I tell myself. They’re just assuming you’re one.
