“You know why,” he retorted.

“It didn’t seem to bother you last night,” Emily said, returning his glares with her own. It had been a one-night stand. That’s all and she accepted that’s all it meant to either of them.

“It’s over,” she said with finality. “Get over it.”

There were snickers in the background and Tanner’s face turned red. She’d embarrassed him, but he would not seem to let go of the fact that he wanted her to leave. And she wasn’t going anywhere. Not unless they fired her.

She glanced at Rose, who immediately understood.

“Come, Emily, and let’s get you settled in. We’ll fill out the necessary paperwork and get you a place to stay. Then later this afternoon, Desiree will give you a tour since Tanner seems to be inconvenienced by you being here. Why is that, Tanner? Do you have something to hide?”

It was all she could do not to laugh.

Inconvenienced my ass. It was just he hadn’t expected her to show up at his ranch, and now, he was having to deal with the shock that he’d been caught in a lie and they had slept together.

“Nothing to hide. And no, Desiree taking over is not a problem,” he said, his face turning red.

Liar.

“Tanner, my office, four p.m.,” Rose said as she shuffled toward the main building.

With one last glare directed at the man she’d spent the night with, Emily walked away from Tanner and followed Rose. Oh my, how was this going to affect her being at the ranch?

Would they fire her if they learned she had slept with Tanner? It was obvious something had happened between them since they’d each given the other a different name.

“Don’t know what happened between you and Tanner, but it’s none of my business. All that matters is you do a good job cooking for our guests,” Rose said.

“Thank you, ma’am. Tanner’s issues won’t interfere with my job, I promise you,” she said.

But would it? Already she could tell he was angry. Why? It had been a single-night affair. Nothing more. She understood that and knew she would never see him again. What more did he expect?

She could handle the situation, but could he?

All he had to do was sayhello, Emilyand everything would have been fine. But no, instead, he’d made a scene and now everyone was guessing how they knew each other.

Not a good way to start a new job – sleeping with the boss.
