“Have you told Tanner this?”

“No,” she responded. “Tonight, he asked me about John, but I try not to talk about him. His death is the reason I left Boulder. I’m trying so hard to start over without people knowing how John died a hero. To live my life to the fullest, but I’m not ready to love and marry again. Not even for Tanner.”

Eugenia flew into the air and laughed. “Honey, I think you’re more than ready. I’ve seen how it is between you and Tanner. You keep believing those lies you’re telling yourself. But I think you’re perfect for each other. You can help him with his PTSD — whatever that is. And he can help you see that your husband wants you to go on living without him.”

Either Eugenia was as stubborn as Tanner or she didn’t want to understand how Emily felt about her dead husband. Why couldn’t people leave her alone and just let her cook? It was there she found comfort. It was there she felt happiest, in the kitchen.

The one-night stand they shared had been perfect for her. No commitments, just a night of joyous sex. But even that, Tanner had managed to ruin with him telling her to leave.

But the dude ranch was the place for her. She’d disappeared from the Boulder scene where the news organizations liked to constantly do stories on her and John. What a great man he was—how he left her all alone. Yada, yada, yada. Over and over, until she had wanted to run out of town screaming.

She yawned. “I’ve got to get some sleep. I have to work in the morning.”

Eugenia chuckled. “I’ll leave, but I think you and Tanner should at least go out on a date.”

“We can’t. Aunt Rose would fire him.”

“Fiddle-dee-dee. No, she won’t. Not unless she wants to have a lot of sleepless nights with me singing her to sleep.”

Emily giggled at the thought of a ghost singing to show her displeasure. But it was also a reminder she could do the same to her. Maybe she should invest in a good set of earplugs. “Good night, Eugenia.”

Quickly, she turned out the light. She couldn’t believe she was holding a conversation with a ghost. And yet whenever she mentioned her name around the family, they weren’t surprised.

Desiree only smiled. This family knew about their ghost problem. They knew about Eugenia.

“Good night, Emily. Sleep well. Tomorrow is a new and exciting day. Now I’m going to visit Tanner.”

Emily laughed. Poor Tanner. After what she’d told the ghost, she would probably be giving him hell. And he didn’t believe in her. Too bad.
