“Yes,” he said. “Did you sing to me?”

She gave a little laugh. “Yes, it always soothed and brought John out of the battle.”

A battle that eventually he returned to, but still when they were together, it helped him come back to her. Just like it had brought Tanner to her. A hot, very desperate-for-sex Tanner who she had wanted just as much.

And that frightened her.

Was that the smart thing to do, when she knew he didn’t want her?

With soft eyes, he stared at her. “Someday you need to tell me about him.”

“Someday,” she said, walking across the room and grabbing a broom, where she began to sweep up the flour. It was useless since she had not cleaned off the table, but she’d do anything to be in motion and stop the thoughts rattling in her brain about how this man didn’t want her.

And yet, she’d just had the best sex of her life. Damn.

More restless energy filled her, so she grabbed the cleaning rag and began to tackle the table, sweeping off the flour to the floor.

Desiree and Travis walked into the kitchen. They stopped in the doorway and gazed at the flour-covered table and the two of them with a coating of bleached dust clinging to them.

“What happened?” Desiree asked, her large emerald eyes wide with disbelief. “You’re both covered in white powder.”

“Flour,” Emily said.

Travis gave a snicker and Emily knew that he understood.

“Is dinner going to be served on time,” Desiree asked, suddenly concerned.

“Of course,” Emily said sharply as she gazed at the people in her kitchen. Why wouldn’t they leave? She had work to do. Tears bubbled up in her throat that needed to be shed.

Tears for being so stupid to let a man who didn’t want her have his way with her again. For being so stupid to jeopardize everything for ten minutes of pure pleasure.

She needed time alone. She needed to think about what just happened. This time, the sex between her and Tanner had been quick, insistent, and demanding.

And dang, why did it feel like he was a missing part of her?

Why was the sex so wonderful and he was such a pain in the ass?

“Everyone out,” she said. “I’ve got to clean this mess up. I’ve got work to do.”

“What happened? Did something explode?”

Yes, two people exploded on the floor and it was wonderful and so frustrating at the same time. What was she supposed to say?

Travis covered his mouth and she could see he was trying not to laugh. But he understood what had transpired here.

“Make sure you clean the area real well,” he said laughing.

Emily glared at him. Tanner said nothing, but she could see how uneasy he was.

“I’ve got work to do. All of you out,” she said. “You too, Tanner.”

She could see that he wanted to talk, but she was in no mood at this point. That time had long passed and he’d said nothing. The episode had happened so suddenly. What had triggered him?

A gasp escaped her and she knew. “Eugenia.”

“Eugenia, what?” Desiree asked, looking very confused.

“She caused this,” Emily said.
