CHAPTER20

Later that night, Emily crawled into bed, exhausted. Tonight, she’d felt closer to Tanner than ever. There was no denying she was falling in love with him and that frightened her. Just thinking of him, her heart warmed, and she hugged the pillow where he’d lain.

His smell was on the pillowcase and she sighed.

It had been an exciting day, and she was ready to turn out the lights.

Suddenly lavender filled the air and she groaned.

Eugenia.

“Dear, are you all right? I saw what happened and I was so afraid for you. But my grandson saved you.”

Oh my, had Eugenia helped that bull escape? No, she would not have put so many people in danger. Would she?

“I’m fine, Eugenia, but we need to talk. I know what you did.”

The air shimmered with her appearance and the old woman looked surprised. Emily knew she was faking the expression. She was certain that she’d been the one who sent Tanner into his episode.

The time to confront her about what she’d done was now. But Emily also worried that she might have had something to do with the bull. Just the way she reacted was enough to make her suspicious.

“You dropped that pan in the kitchen on purpose because you knew it would send Tanner into an episode. You overheard us talking about pretending to be going along with your matchmaking schemes and so you got even.”

The ghost tossed up her hands in the air like that was the most ridiculous thing she could have said.

“Why on earth would I do that? I don’t want my grandson even thinking he’s back in the war. I want him thinking about you.”

Oh yes, she most definitely started his episode.

“Which achieved your purpose. I think you heard us talking about you and you wanted to see how I would react to his hallucinations. Did I pass the test?”

The old woman laughed. “Why would I want to make my grandson have one of these ‘episodes,’ as you call them. I want him to be happy. Going back to a war, even in his mind, is not good.”

The old woman was as stubborn as they came and crafty as well. Someday Emily was going to read up on the family history and learn her story. She wanted to know what else she’d done.

“Unless it achieved what you wanted. Which was for the two of us to get together. You thought it would force us together and it did.”

The ghost smiled. “You two are so cute together.”

There was no doubt in Emily’s mind that Eugenia had dropped that kitchen pan. She’d smelled the lavender right before the pan dropped. The woman didn’t respond to her, she just sat there grinning.

“Did you stick around long?”

“Oh no, dear. When the clothes start coming off, I’ve accomplished—”

Emily started to laugh and shook her head. “Yeah, just what I thought. You accomplished your goal and then you got out of there before you witnessed us having sex on the floor.”

A flurry of sparkles filled the air and she had to look twice to make certain that Eugenia was still there.

“Dear, you don’t talk to your grandson’s grandmother about the two of you having sex,” she said. “It’s not proper.”

“You told me that you wanted to make certain that the family continued. I would think that would be exactly what you wanted to hear,” Emily said, sitting up cross-legged on the bed. “Would you like to know that we did it that day without birth control?”

The ghost shook her head. “Birth control? Whatever are you talking about?”

Emily should have known better than to mention that, but she liked to test the woman’s knowledge occasionally.

“It’s a way to prevent the woman from getting pregnant. Your job is going to be a lot tougher now that there is birth control.”
