“Did you tell him you loved him?”

Why would that have made a difference? This morning, he’d been determined to end it with her. Nothing she said would have stopped him. She’d even mentioned that they were falling in love, but that hadn’t slowed him down. He wanted her gone and she was going to grant his wish.

“No, it would not have changed anything.”

“You don’t know that for certain,” Eugenia said.

Oh, yes she did. Nothing would have changed his mind.

Emily finished packing and glanced around the room. She’d enjoyed staying here. It had been a great job, except for the fact that she’d fallen in love with Tanner.

“The problem is not with me,” Emily said. “The problem is with Tanner. I don’t even know what brought this on today. Last night, everything had been perfect. We made love and yet, this morning, he was a raving madman determined that I leave.”

A knock resounded at the door. Desiree walked in. “I know what brought this on today. I can explain to you exactly what happened.”

A tall, beautiful woman walked into the room behind her. “Hi, we haven’t met. I’m Travis’s fiancée, Samantha. Hello, Eugenia. I’m so glad you’re here.”

“Darling, if I could hug you, I would,” the older woman said.

They were a little late. She glanced at her watch. She wanted to hit the Dallas-Fort Worth traffic before rush hour.

“Nice to meet you. I’m Emily and I’m just about to leave. I wish we could have gotten to know each other better.”

The woman walked over and sank down into the chair by the bed. “Sorry, but I’ve been so tired lately. Desiree and I have pieced together what happened and want to explain to you what we think caused Tanner to end it with you so abruptly. You need to know.”

Emily gazed at the two women. “How did you piece it together?”

“It’s a timing thing,” Desiree said. “First, Tanner had that awful meeting with Aunt Rose that even now we’re trying to get reversed. She gave him a two-week suspension. So he was very upset about that.”

“Travis was not too happy about it either,” Samantha said. “That puts all the ranch work on him.”

Eugenia floated into the air. “I’m going to make that woman’s life miserable tonight. Why did she suspend my grandson?”

Desiree laughed. “The bull incident at the rodeo yesterday and then her seeing Tanner and Emily together.”

Eugenia was quiet and Emily turned to her. “You had something to do with that bull getting out, didn’t you?”

The ghost sighed. “Well, I just thought how wonderful it would be for my grandson to rescue you. Save you. I thought it would help him to realize how he’s falling in love with you.”

“You caused that?” Desiree asked, her eyes widening. “No wonder he’s so pissed. He didn’t do anything and yet the bull got out and he took the blame for it.”

“Well, it did bring them together,” Eugenia said sheepishly. “It was for love.”

“You haven’t learned, have you,” Samantha said. “You can’t be in control of getting people together.”

One thing Emily hoped she didn’t have at her new job, wherever that could be, was an interfering ghost. Especially a matchmaking ghost. Just thinking it made her feel crazy.

“What else happened that caused Tanner to break it off with me?”

“This was the hardest part to figure out,” Desiree said. “But when I ran into Samantha today and learned her news, it made sense.”

Samantha grinned. “Travis went to speak to Tanner this morning. He asked Tanner to stand up with us. We’re getting married a little quicker than we planned. I’m pregnant.”

“Thank you, Lord,” Eugenia said, fluttering around. “I’m so happy. Another Burnett. Another grandson or granddaughter. Just what this old woman needed to hear. My matchmaking is working.”

“Oh, please,” Desiree said.

“Congratulations,” Emily said, her heart beating in her chest. But why would that send Tanner running from her? She didn’t understand.
