‘What?’

‘The reason for your hate.’

‘There’s no hate.’

‘There is.’

She said nothing.

‘Seriously,’ Dante pushed. ‘We were friends...we had sex once when we were young. Now, years later, I’m doing all I can to help you find your twin—and, yes, you’re helping me out in return—but there’s so much anger in you, Alicia.’

‘No.’

‘Yes,’ Dante said. ‘There is. So before we attempt to play lovers, let’s have it out now, Alicia. Why the animosity?’

He really had waited for his moment. They were face to face and she had nowhere to go.

‘The restrooms are there.’ He gestured his head. ‘If you want go in there and hide for the flight, go. Or we talk.’

For the first time in her life Alicia found she’d rather be in Reverend Mother’s office—because this really was a question too big for her to handle.

Aside from her upset and pain, it actually wasn’t about her.

‘Alicia?

His calling of her name was a demand for a response, so she gave him the part that was her own. ‘I heard some talk in the village.’

‘Such as...?’

‘The usual.’

‘Are we really having this conversation again?’

‘There was a lot of talk.’

‘So what’s new? I told you not to listen.’

‘I tried not to.’

‘Clearly not that hard.’

‘It felt personal.’ She was being as honest as she dared to be.

‘Was it about us?’ He frowned. ‘Were we seen?’

‘No.’

‘Was it because you were late back?’

‘It wasn’t about us!’

‘Then who?’

‘I don’t know!’ Alicia said. ‘I don’t know who she was.’

‘So, a vague rumour?’ He gave her a tight smile. ‘Thanks, Alicia.’

He ignored her then. But even though she was tired she was too nervous to try to sleep with Dante sitting opposite, his scent light in the air. Nervous that his foot would tap hers when he stretched out. Nervous that if she fell asleep she would go back in her mind to their intimate time, recall it in detail when she had spent years trying to deny it.
