He’d have found out that she was a virgin.

She breathed out slowly, to control her frantic heart.

And the palace doves, even with their clipped wings, would have taken flight when she screamed—because she was in no doubt, after that very brief glimpse, that it would have hurt.

Should she tell him?

How?

Just say,Julius, I’ve never done this? Or,Julius, I’m actually a virgin.

Beatrice could almost picture his wide eyes and the flash of awkwardness as he realised that the one-night stand he wanted came with a hymen and might require a little more—or a littleless—than pure passion.

No.

Beatrice glanced over to the gleaming desk, where for the first time she’d felt unashamed and had wanted to know sheer pleasure. Just that.

Right now, she could not think further than that.

‘Those shoes of his are killing me,’ Julian groaned as the guard’s shoes squeaked and clomped along the corridor towards them.

Squeak.

Clomp.

Squeak.

Clomp.

‘If he goes out to the terrace for a smoke,’ Julius whispered in a low voice, ‘we’ll make a run for it.’

‘No!’ Beatrice was on the edge of laughing, but changed it to a smile for the guard, who nodded as he walked past.

They heard every shudder of the ancient lift creaking its way up to collect him, but it was made bearable as Julius silently mouthed all that he intended to do to her as soon as they were alone.

She blushed, but nodded her assent.

‘Thank God,’ he said, when they were finally alone. But instead of carrying on where they’d left off he held her by the waist and looked down at her. ‘I’m so glad that guard showed when he did.’

‘Why?’

‘I’ve been waiting for this.’

‘So have I.’

It felt as if she’d been waiting all her life.

‘Here,’ he said, and took her jacket from the chair and passed it over to her, as well as her bag. ‘We have a meeting to get to.’

She slipped on her jacket and flicked out her hair over the collar. ‘One rule,’ she said as they walked towards his residence. She felt so confident, so completely sure in this moment.

One night.

That was as safe as she could get.

No let-down.

No hurt.
