I hear the click of another gun behind us, and I just know there’s a big ugly goon holding a gun to the head of my other love. Shit. Fuck. God-motherfucking-damnit! We get pushed out into the open, only stumbling slightly, but still refusing to show fear. My will to keep them alive is much stronger than their want to play some stupid power play games.

“What do you want Raffaele?” I ask, letting a calm bravado take over. I walk to Ren and trace a finger down his cheek, wishing like hell he’d wake up, but also thankful he’s knocked out so he doesn’t have to play witness to whatever comes next.

“Well my dear, I’m sure you’re well aware that no one lives to disrespect the Gavino name. Not even a Gavino. It appears as though you’ve managed to brainwash my grandson here into thinking that he’s alright with sharing you with three other men. Let me assure you, that has not ever been acceptable and it never will be. He’s as much a disgrace as you are a whore it would seem. You have two options here, because I love my grandson and I’m feeling generous.” He cocks his head at me, like he’s studying me. Watching to see what hints I’ll give him to an insider perspective of my brain. Fat fucking chance old man.

“Pfft. Clearly you love your grandson. You show your affections well.” I roll my eyes.

“Watch your smart mouth before you find my well of generosity has all dried up.” He glares at me, as if that’s enough to scare me into submission. This guy is intimidating, sure. But I’m not your average bitch. He made sure of it by forcing me to grow up in abject poverty, surrounded by drug addicts and rapists.

“As lovely as this trip has been, would you mind getting to your point? I’m getting tired. It’s far past my bedtime.” I smirk.

“You really can’t help yourself can you? You’re really just that ignorant, or maybe just that uncaring that your life hangs in the balance of all this.” He says, genuine curiosity coloring his words.

“How about we up the stakes further? Hmm?” He nods to his goon and I can tell by the low grunt behind me that he’s just done something to Matteo. I fight my instinct to tighten up or flinch. My body has to remain calm and unaffected in order to give this man nothing. The internal war waging in my mind is a direct contrast to my outward appearance.

“What are my options Raffaele? I wasn’t lying when I said I’m growing tired. I don’t like these silly power moves on a good day, and it just so happens that I’m incredibly sleep deprived this evening.”

“Fine, let’s move this along then so the little princess can get her beauty sleep.” He smiles, though it isn’t a nice smile at all. Though whatever happens behind me wipes the smile from his lips in an instant. He lifts his gun and aims behind me. Without thinking I rush at him, unwilling to let him hurt Matteo.

“These boys just blindly follow you huh. Would they still if they knew you were married to Ren?! Would they settle for never being anything other than second best?!” And then he shoots me with a snarl on his lips.

Everything sort of slows down after that. I hear the bang of another gun. I see Raffaele’s brain matter explode. I turn to see three of my kings standing tall and furious - not even bothering to come to me. I can’t blame them after Raffaele sharing my secret with them like that. The throat of the man who hurt Matteo is slit and he lies dead on the floor and Ren is still knocked out cold.

And then I see nothing but darkness. There is no more light, there is no more love, but mostly there is no more pain. Instead I just sort of fade away…
