“They’re not meant to be. I’m not kidding.”

We stared at each other for a few long moments until Vera’s lips curled into another small smile. She turned away to hide it, but I grabbed her arm and forced her to look back at me. When I saw her face, she was grinning from ear to ear and biting her lip to hold back a laugh.

I chuckled softly, not really seeing what was funny, but, fuck, I couldn’t stop myself.

After clutching her stomach, she nearly doubled over with laughter. Her body trembled back and forth, the way it had years ago, as tears pricked the corners of her eyes. For the first time in years, she looked genuinely happy.

At least for me, it was the first time that I felt happy. Somewhat.

“I hate you,” she said, giggles subsiding. She wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes and walked over to the bed, where she sat down and pulled off her dirty, off-brand Vans. “I hate you so much that it’s not even funny.”

“You’re laughing, aren’t you?”

“I’m only laughing because I feel like I’m going insane,” she said, but I knew she was lying. She set her shoes neatly beside the bed and wiggled her toes in her pair of turtle socks. “I’ve been working nonstop lately.”

“Mmhmm,” I said. “Sure. We’ll call it that. It’s not because you’re insanely attracted to me.”

“No.” She said the word with so much seriousness that I almost believed her. She looked up at me through huge brown eyes and arched a brow. “You have way too much arrogance for me to be attracted to you.”

“What about my dick?”

“What about it?”

“You seemed to be very attracted to it during History today.”

“Because you are literally blackmailing me!”

I smiled and shook my head. “Excuses, excuses.”

I might’ve been blackmailing her, but that didn’t erase the fact that she had jerked me off under the desk like she had been thinking about me all night. It didn’t erase how tight her pussy had clenched on my cock when I told her that I’d come inside her again.

She shifted on my bed uncomfortably and looked back at the notebook on my desk. “Anyway, now that we’ve established I can’t have sex with you for an entire week, I think you should bring me home. We have nothing to do here anyway.”

But she had just taken her shoes off. She didn’t want to leave now.

“I’m not bringing you home.”

“Then, what are we going to do?” she asked.

I pulled out the chair at my desk and nodded to it. “Pull out your computer. We’re going to write a scene for your book together.”

VERA

“Idon’t have a computer,” I said quickly, sitting down at the large black marble desk.

I was ashamed that I didn’t have more money. Blaise seemed to … get everything he ever wanted. He didn’t even have to ask.

We were lucky that one of Mateo’s friends had given him an old Xbox that they weren’t using anymore. The most Mom could afford was a nice meal at the local Applebee’s for our birthdays, and that counted as our gift.

Instead of pushing it, Blaise stood behind me with one veiny, large hand on the desk and the other on the back of the seat. “Do you really write all your stories by hand and hope that you don’t lose them?”

“Yeah.” I shrugged. “I mean, the only person who’s meant to read them is me.”

“You’re fucking kidding me, right?” he said.

My cheeks flushed, and all I could seem to think about was how my family couldn’t afford a nice laptop to write, because if I could, I would one hundred percent use it so I didn’t lose my stories. “No, we can’t affor—”
