BLAISE

After bringing Vera to the skatepark after school today to teach her how to ride a bit more, I dropped her off at home and eyed João Rocha’s house as I headed back home. He stood outside with his friends—Landon and Kai and even Imani Abara, a girl from the rich side of town.

I gripped the steering wheel tighter, but I didn’t have the damn negative energy to want to kick his ass tonight. I had just spent the past few hours with Vera. So, I reluctantly ignored his arrogant ass.

The moment I drove into the ritzy sector of Redwood, I sensed something was off.

Maybe I should’ve paid more attention to Avery earlier.

Two police cars sat in the driveway, almost blocking my entrance into the garage. After grumbling to myself, I pulled into my driveway. I rolled my eyes and drove around them, inches away from damaging public property—but it wasn’t my fault that Dad must’ve gotten himself in trouble somehow.

Once I made it into the garage, I turned off the car and shut the door, attempting to figure out what the hell could’ve happened now. The last time the police had shown up at our house, Dad had been caught dick deep in the police chief’s wife. And the chief had wanted a shit-ton of money to cover it up and recoup the loss of his wife’s pussy.

Annoying as fuck.

But I fucking hoped that he hadn’t done some shit like that again. I didn’t care about how it affected Mom or his stupid status. I didn’t want to sit through dinner after dinner after fucking dinner to help him polish his reputation again.

I ran a hand over my face and groaned. They had to know I was home. Security must’ve told them. Sooner or later, they’d come to find me, if they wanted me to polish up their reputations again.

As expected, one of Dad’s security guards walked into the garage in a black suit and that pissed off expression he always had. Without saying a word to me, he nodded toward the door he had just come through.

Grumbling, I rolled my eyes, grabbed my shit, and followed him into the house.

When I walked through the door from the garage to the foyer, I stopped and stared emptily at Dad standing beside two police officers and glaring at me. Fucking great. First time seeing him again in, what, three months now? Had it been that long?

“The fuck is this?”

Dad scowled. “Blaise, not now.”

“What a fucking amazing time to be alive,” I growled, tossing my backpack on the ground next to the door and picking up my skateboard. “Get a visit from my lovely father and the police, all wrapped into one.”

While Dad’s glare hardened, Mom acted like the innocentcould do no harmmediator in front of the police. “Blaise, come here,” Mom said, hurrying over to the door and wrapping her arm around my shoulders. She lowered her voice to whisper to me. “If you know something, don’t say anything to them. Not until the lawyer gets here.”

I furrowed my brows. “What do you mean? What’s going on?”

Redwood’s big, macho police chief and the head cheerleader’s father crossed his arms and inspected me from head to toe. He stood next to another policeman, who had his thumb on his gun, as if he was preparing to pull it on me.

“Where have you been?” the chief asked.

“Ou—”

“He’s not answering any questions until our lawyer arrives,” Dad said.

“That makes him look like a suspect.”

“I don’t give a fuck what it looks like,” Dad said, voice harsh.

“A suspect?” I asked, confused about what the fuck was happening. “For what?”

Mom glanced at Dad nervously, and Dad looked at the chief until the big man in uniform pressed his lips together.

“Late last night, we found Skylar Walker’s body washed up on the town beach.”

ChapterFifty-One

BLAISE

“She’s fucking dead?” I asked in disbelief.
