“You’re going to great lengths to keep this secret,” I whispered, staring out the tinted window at the trees we whizzed by. Part of me was a bit nervous that João wasn’t bringing me anywhere just to tell me what had happened, but to keep me quiet too.

Was this what he did to other people? Was this what he did to people hekilled? Who had he killed? He’d said he had taken someone’s life when I was talking about Skylar. Was he angry that I was kinda, sorta blackmailing him with his sister?

My stomach twisted into tighter knots. “João …”

“Shut up, Vera.”

I sucked in a sharp breath and reached for the door handle, tugging on it. But it was locked. João glanced over at me, clenched his sharp jaw, and rolled his eyes without saying a single word.

“Let me out,” I whispered. “Please.”

“Relax,” he said, turning into the driveway of an abandoned warehouse, which was decorated with vines, moss, and dirt. It seemed like this place hadn’t been taken care of for decades. “I’m not going to hurt you.”

“No, you’re just going to kill me here.”

Once he drove farther, I spotted a motorcycle in the back. Was that Kai’s bike?

He parked the car next to it and nodded to the door. “Get out.”

After weighing my options, I stepped out of the car. If he was going to kill me, I couldn’t run. He’d chase me down and probably have fun doing it. I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of hearing me scream and watching me try to run. I sucked at it.

When I stepped inside the secluded warehouse, Landon and Kai stood on the opposite side. Nerves rushed through me. I had never been alone with all three of them like this. What were they planning on doing with me?

“What is this?” I asked.

João grabbed my shoulder and pushed me forward to them. “Move.”

“But—”

“Move.”

Landon and Kai met us halfway, and then João shoved his hands into his pockets and grimaced at me. I squeezed my eyes closed and waited for him to pull out a gun to shoot me dead. This was going to be my last—

“Honestly, we couldn’t find much on Blaise and Skylar,” João said. “At least, not in the fucking time that you gave us.”

I opened my eyes and glanced between the three boys. “Wait, so you’re not going to kill me? You have actually found information?”

“Kill you?” Landon asked, looking at João. “What the fuck did you tell her we were going to do?”

“I didn’t tell her shit. She fucking came up with this idea by herself,” he said, looking back over at me with hard brown eyes. “As I was fucking saying, if you’d listen to me, we don’t have much information. But what I could get was that Blaise’s father slept with the police chief’s wife. So, the police chief is trying to put the blame on Blaise to get back at his father.”

“Also, I think Skylar had some mental issues,” Kai said. “At least, from what I have gathered through her text messages and phone, she’d been seeing a therapist every Tuesday and Thursday. They had spoken briefly about sexual assault and drug addiction over text.”

“You were able to sneak into her phone?” I asked.

“Don’t worry about it,” João said, his voice final.

I might have wanted to see what she had written to Blaise, but I couldn’t. It wasn’t my place, and if anyone found out, they might become suspicious.

“So, what’d you find? Who do you think did it? Do you think it was Mr. Avery? You said that he was part of the mob?” I asked João, having so many more questions and not so many answers.

Landon and Kai cut their gazes to João.

“What’re you fucking telling Vera everything we know about everyone in fucking Redwood?” Landon asked.

“I thought she knew. I was surprised that Blaise hadn’t told her already. They’re fucking related. And besides, she kept blabbing on and on to him. She wouldn’t fucking stop. I needed something to shut her up today.”

After glaring at João’s profile, I crossed my arms. “So? Do you think he did it or not? You said you don’t trust him.”
