He nods. “Get him inside. Keep him steady. And you,” he says, eyes landing on me. “Tell me exactly what happened. Everything. Go.”

I trail them inside, dazed as I recount everything I remember doing once I found him. Chase and Kyle carry Nero into the back of the house, and lay him out on the couch in the den. I watch in horror as the doctor strips his clothing off, revealing purple bruises and more dark, sticky blood.

“Blood bags, in my case,” he snaps, not looking up.

I hesitate, reeling.

“Christ, will someone get me the blood?” he roars. “I won’t have enough. His pulse is too weak. What’s your blood type?”

There’s silence.

“You! What’s his blood type?”

I realize he’s yelling at me. “I… I… I don’t know,” I blurt, feeling terrible. I’m his wife. I’m supposed to know.

“Then we’ll need a universal donor,” the doctor says. “O-negative.”

“I have it,” Kyle speaks up.

“Good, get over here.” The doctor beckons. Kyle rolls up his sleeve, the doctor producing ugly looking needles and plastic tubing. He sticks Kyle, who barely winces, and the tubing starts to fill with blood as the doctor preps Nero’s arm, too.

“Wait, is that safe?” I blurt, watching them, panicked. This is all wrong. We should be at a hospital, with real doctors, and an operating room. “What are you doing?”

They ignore me.

“Listen to me!” I cry, losing it. “Stop, stop this!”

“Someone get her out of here,” the doctor demands, not looking up. Chase roughly grabs me and hustles me out of the room.

“No!” I fight, trying to stay. “I’m not leaving him!”

Chase scowls. “You’ve done enough, Princess.”

He shoves me into the hallway and slams the door in my face.

I stumble back, sinking against the wall, and sliding to the ground. Exhaustion hits me, and it’s all I can do to gulp in panicked lungfuls of air. They’ll save him, won’t they?

They have to save him.

I don’t knowhow long I sit there, collapsed on the floor. I’m dimly aware of Chase and Kyle coming and going from the room, carrying towels, water, bloodstained clothing. But I’m spent. I can’t stop thinking about the moment the car bomb went off. I’d never been so scared in my life. The sound seems to echo in my ears even now.

“Lily!”

I blink and realize that Miles is standing in front of me, and the look on his face makes me think he’s been trying to get my attention for a while. How long have I been sitting here, reliving what happened to Nero?

I slowly get to my feet. My mind feels sluggish, and I take a deep breath, trying to shake off this feeling of shock and dread.

The door to the den is still shut. What does that mean?

“… Lily?”

I blink. “I-I’m sorry. What?” I ask.

“Here,” Miles leads me gently down the hall, away from whatever the doctor is doing with Nero’s broken body. “You’re still in shock.”

In the kitchen, I find a crowd has gathered. Avery, Chase, and some of Nero’s other inner circle. They’re milling around, the mood grim. The minute I walk in, there’s a barrage of questions.

“How is he?”
