“She’s around here… Somewhere. She wanted to see the place.”

I pull out my phone, and call. “You beat me to it,” I tell her. “I wanted to give you the tour.”

She giggles. I can hear from the background noise, she’s somewhere nearby. “You know me, I don’t like to wait. Look up.”

“Where?” I shield my eyes against the sinking sun.

“The elevator.”

I turn, spotting her. One of the rudimentary construction elevators is slowly hoisting up the building, and Lily’s standing on it behind the safety barrier, along with my foreman. “You said the view will be the best in the city,” she continues, waving down at me. “I wanted to take a peek. You know, maybe we should live in one of these condos. Penthouse, obviously.”

I laugh. “Sure you can afford it?”

I’m teasing her, but the truth is that I like that she’s thinking about a future that includes me.

“No, but I have a very generous husband.” Lily says. “And if I play my cards right, he’ll—”

Her words cut off by a grinding noise.

“What’s that?” I ask, feeling a chill.

“I don’t know. Nero—”

Her answer cuts off with a chilling scream, as before my eyes, one of the elevator cables snaps, and the entire rig goes plummeting toward the ground.
