Once we’re done, Cody takes my hand and pulls me into his chest. “Let’s get you two home.”

He takes my hand as we walk toward Tobias. Pulling away from me, he runs over and lifts Tobias up, swinging him around. My son’s little giggles are music to my ears as I watch the two of them play.

We reach my house and Cody carries Tobias inside while I clean up my project outside. I bring my sander and painting inside and can hear Cody and Tobias laughing upstairs.

Walking up there, I lean on the doorframe and watch as Cody tucks my son into bed. It’s something I never dreamed of, but every interaction they have just melts my heart.

Cody turns around, walking over to me and placing a soft kiss on my forehead.

“Meet you downstairs.”

I take my turn, sitting on the edge of Tobias’s bed, and read him a quick book.

“Goodnight my sweet boy. I love you so much.”

“Goodnight, mommy. Love you.”

Standing, I make sure his nightlights are on before stepping out and closing his door. My heart flutters knowing Cody is down there waiting for me.

Walking down the steps, Cody is standing at the sliding doors looking out.

“Everything okay?”

He turns and smiles. “Of course. You did a great job with those chairs. Just make sure to wear a mask next time you’re sanding. I’ll bring some up from my garage.”

“That’s very sweet.”

“There you go using that sweet word again.”

We both laugh as he walks over, wrapping his arms around me. “Well, you are, mister grouchy Cody from next door.”

Cody looks down and our lips meet. It’s like the fireworks all over again. But this time, Cody pulls back before placing another soft kiss on my lips.

“Only sweet for you, June bug. Wanna grab breakfast tomorrow?”

“Uh, sure.”

He laughs before kissing me again. “I like breakfast dates. And the wee man will love the pancakes. They make them like smiley faces for the kids.”

“Me and Tobias?”

“Yeah. Tobias is part of you. I would never leave him out of any of this. Just remember what I told you. If I’m moving too fast or overstepping, just say so.”

I nod. “Okay. Okay, I will.”

Cody leans down and nips my earlobe. “Good girl.” Goosebumps spread across my body. “See you in the morning, beautiful.”

With one last kiss, Cody walks out the door and down his driveway. I quickly lock up and sprint to my room, giddy like a schoolgirl after her first date.

Cody makes me feel…alive. It’s like I’m walking on a cloud in a fairytale. He is every woman’s book boyfriend’s dream come true, and he’s allmine.
