Suck it, Derek. I’m living my best life without you.

Chapter two

Wildflower Child

Cody

Saturdaymorning; my time to take it easy and work on my own projects. I grab my cup of coffee and head into my garage, my Irish wolfhound Dagda right on my heels.

I sit down and look at the motorcycle on my lift. It’s in a million pieces, but I know it will look awesome once I’m done. Picking up some tools, I quickly get to work as Dagda lies on his dog bed.

I’m in my element when I’m in this garage. I’ve always loved to tinker, but once I hit rock bottom as a young man, working with my hands was the only thing that helped me get out of that pit. I built my house, my garage, then got to work fixing up old motorcycles back to their original glory days. Now, I create custom bikes as a living.I built the life I always dreamed of.

This motorcycle I’m currently working on is going to a guy out west. He wants a bike for show and I plan to make that happen. This is my domain; I create art out of these machines. I get right to work, knowing I have a deadline to make this happen. My customer will be out here to pick the machine up, and I need to have it done by then.

One month. I got this.

As the tools and I become one, I can’t help thinking of the little spitfire that just moved in;Juniper. Her long brown hair and golden eyes are burnt into my memory. Most women either run from me, or try their damn hardest to climb me like a tree.

But Juniper? She stood her ground and showed no interest in me. I chuckle as I think back to yesterday and her sassy attitude. As I turn my socket, Dagda lifts his head up, letting out a soft bark.

“Dagda, down.”

But he stands instead, letting out another bark.

“Dagda! Shut up, man. The squirrels are just teasing you.”

“That’s not a very nice thing to say.” Pipes up a little voice from my garage door.

I turn to find a wee blonde boy standing there, a soccer ball under one arm.

“My mommy says that’s a bad word.”

“And I bet your mommy wouldn’t be too happy that you’re in my garage right now.”

He shrugs. “Mommy is busy right now doing her video.”

“Her video…? What does she do on video?”

“Talks to her big boss. We only just moved here, so I’m explorin’.”

I nod, realizing this must be Juniper’s child. The toys in the yard, stuffed animals falling out of the moving boxes.Everything is coming together now.

“You should probably get moving back down the driveway before she notices you’re missing. Don’t want her to worry.”

He leans in the doorway and points to Dagda. “Your puppy has a funny name.”

I chuckle at the curious little dude. “It’s Celtic. We’re both from Ireland, so I thought it was appropriate.”

“What’s your name, mister?”

“I’m Cody. What’s your name?”

He grins. “I’m Tobias and I’m five years old.”

“Whoa, big man.”

“My mommy says that I’m growing too fast.” He looks out the window. “Why you got such a long driveway?”
