“I don’t mind. Just don’t want him wandering into the garage to get hurt. That’s all.”

“I’ll have a talk with him. Again, I’m really sorry.”

Cody gives me that panty-melting smile again. “It’s all good. The wee man is a fiery little one. Just have him knock on my door next time.”

“Great. Now, if you don’t mind, I need to get dinner started and figure out my life… again.”

“Sounds… crappy.” He chuckles. “Have a good night. Come, Dagda.”

I watch as Cody and the dog walk out the door, shutting it behind them. Taking another swig of wine, I get to work making dinner.

Tobias and I need to eat and I need to get him to bed so I can apply for jobs. I have some money saved up, but will need to have some sort of income to keep this place up. Never in my life would I have imagined being a single mom, freshly moved into this house, and without a job.

“Tobias! Come help clean the table off, buddy!”

I can hear his little footsteps on the stairs as he comes running into the kitchen. “Where did mister Cody go?”

“He had to go home, baby. Can you wipe down the table and put our plates on it?”

He nods as he does what I asked while I scoop the skillet meal into a large bowl. Bringing it over to the table, we both sit down and I put some into our bowls.

“What were you doing in Cody’s garage?”

Tobias shrugs. ‘Hanging out. I like his puppy.”

“He is pretty cool… but you need to ask permission before you leave the house, and especially before you go into somebody’s house or garage.”

“Mister Cody said the same thing. I’ll ask next time, mommy.”

I smile at my little boy, growing before my eyes. We finish up dinner and clean it up, soon heading up to bed. Once Tobias is all tucked in, I grab my laptop and get to work finding a new job.

I’ll figure it out somehow. I always do it for Tobias…

Searching around, I don’t see anything remote that will let me stay home with my baby. He doesn’t start school until the fall, so I need something that can work around those hours. But finding it will be like finding a unicorn that farts sparkles in the marshmallow forest.

I’m really not that dramatic… Maybe it’s just the wine. How much did I have? Shit…

Getting up from my little desk, I grab my phone and plop down on my bed. Scrolling through social media, I find some people giving away old furniture.

That would look great, painted and done up nice.

And that’s when the idea hits me; refab furniture and sell it! I could do entire themes. Finally, put my art skills and degree to use. Forget office jobs. I’m going to do what I love.

I walk toward my window when I see a faint light. Coming up the driveway is Cody in all his delicious glory. No shirt, dog tied to his waist as they run up the road. His tattoos move with his body, his long hair tied up in a bun.

Jesus, am I drooling?

“Snap out of it, June!”

I go to move away from the window, but not before Cody looks up and catches me staring at him.

Snapping the curtains closed, I slink to the floor and can feel my body turning red from embarrassment.

“Well, it was nice living here. Time to pack it up and move.”

Huffing, I get up and throw some shorts and a tank on, getting into bed. Hopefully Cody forgets all about this whole… thing. Doubtful, but a girl can damn sure hope.

As I lay my head down, my mind won’t stop spinning. There’s no way I can sleep like this. I throw the blankets aside and slip my cheetah slippers on, heading down the steps.
