“I didn’t wake you, did I?”

“No, I haven’t spoken to anyone yet, so my voice is still asleep.” I laughed. “Sorry about that.”

“It’s okay. Listen, do you have time for us to get together?”

“If I didn’t, I’d make time. Finding my sister is the only thing I care about.”

“Understood. Where are you now?”

“My mom’s.”

“Where does your sister live?”

“With her.”

“I’d like to make arrangements to take a look at Luisa’s room.”

“Okay.” I was about to tell him he could come by anytime, but after my mother’s strange reaction the night before, I decided it would be best to check with her first. “That should be fine. My mom isn’t here right now, but I’d like to mention it to her before anyone shows up here.”

“Again, understood.”

I waited for him to say something else, and when he didn’t, I thought maybe the call had dropped. “Hello?”

“I’m here.”

“Is everything okay?”

“Yeah. I, uh, was about to ask if you wanted to have breakfast. Or lunch.”

“But you changed your mind?”

“I wasn’t sure if you’d accept the invitation.”

“What happened to me not arguing with you since you’re helping me find my sister?”

He chuckled. “I’m not going to force you to eat with me, Seraphina.”

“You know what I’d really like?”

“I’m afraid to ask.”

“Very funny. Anyway, what if I made a picnic and we went back to See Canyon?” I suggested.

“Yeah? I could get behind that.”

“What time do you want to meet?”

“I’ll pick you up.”

“We can meet at my place, then. I need to pick a few things up there anyway.”

“When will you be ready?” he asked.

I checked my watch. I needed to shower and maybe swing by the market since I doubted I had much to eat in my apartment. Maybe it would be easier if I picked up food to go. “Um, a couple of hours?”

“Tell you what, if you can swing an hour, I’ll bring the picnic. I’m starving.”

“In that case, I can be ready in thirty minutes.”
