“Sometimes.”

“Sera?” God, what could I say? I couldn’t ask her if she planned to continue her pursuit of Los Caballeros, now armed with the evidence she’d need to follow through with her initial threats. I trusted her, for fuck’s sake.

“What?”

“Never mind. It wasn’t important.”

“No, tell me.”

“I was going to ask if you wanted me to switch apartments to give you time alone with Luisa once we find her.”

She thought about it for several seconds, then nodded. “It would be a good idea if you would.”

That quickly, I felt her slipping away from me. The closeness I’d felt when I held her in my arms last night as we slept seemed nonexistent. She was withdrawing. I’d served my purpose, and now she was done with me.

God, why was I such a jackass when it came to women? Alex hadn’t done what Seraphina was doing, but there were enough signs for me to know a relationship between us would never last. I’d ignored what my gut knew. This time, I wouldn’t be so foolish.
