Sighing, Mikhail turned away from the door and knew the woman who he cherished and was indeed his heart was as stubborn as he was. She had to come out sometime and didn’t want to incur more stress than required. He stepped away from the door then walked over to the bar.
“You look like you could use a drink,” Jagger stated.
“Indeed,” he answered. “Scotch, please,” he replied.
The other four men joined Mikhail and Jagger at the bar. Mikhail glanced at the Chinese food and had lost all appetite. “The last time I was here. My father had me follow. He has pictures of Kimber. He never tipped his hand to the fact when I told him I was returning here.”
“Damn,” Nicco whispered as Jagger passed Mikhail a highball glass.
“With the security breach, there is a high chance they not only know where I stayed, but what Kimber looks like,” Mikhail informed the others before taking a large sip of his drink.
“Do they know my name?” Kimber asked quietly from behind them.
Mikhail placed his cocktail on the granite surface of the bar and turned to the woman he was terrified of losing. “Most likely,” he replied.
Kimber nodded, then closed the distance and threw herself against Mikhail’s body. His arms went around her, and he held her close to his body.
“I promise I’ll keep you safe,” Mikhail assured her and placed a kiss on the top of her head.
Now he just needed to figure out how to do that.
CHAPTER TEN
Kimber
Kimber was determined to get some food into her. Not that she felt like eating, but considering the baby inside her meant everything to her, as much as the man who put it there. She wanted to give the future heir of Barrastu the best possible chance as she sat at the table while the men made calls around her. However, Kimber spent more time pushing food around on her plate with her chopsticks than eating. She was working on her second ginger ale and debated her future.
Two things were clear.
She wanted to survive this, and two, she wanted to spend her life with Mikhail.
“How are you doing?” Mikhail asked, gently pulling out a chair and sitting at the table with her.
“As good as can be expected,” she replied. “I’m feeling frustrated,” she confessed. “All I can do is sit here. I still don’t know how Hailey did it. Having her life threatened, and never once did she back down. She doesn’t have the luxury of a beast beneath.”
Mikhail was quiet a moment, and she could tell he pondered something. “There are many different kinds of strength. Knowing you, your brother, and those friends you perceive as family, you being wolf beneath your beautiful human form, and the destined to be my mate are an animal. Hailey, from what I can tell, loves completely. Love can be one of the most powerful forces in the world.”
Love? Did Kimber love Mikhail?
The answer surprised her. She did.
Phones around them went off. The fact that Luke and her brothers rang simultaneously sent a chill down her spine.
The wolf beneath Mikhail’s human form flickered in his Amber eyes.
“Thanks, dad. I’ll have Luke text pictures to the pack, and thank you.” There was a pause. “I think that’s something you and mom need to ask Kimber that question, but not tonight. I’ll keep you posted.”
“What did dad ask?” Kimber inquired of her brother.
Jagger inhaled a deep breath. “We can’t move you, and you won’t be going to California,” he added without room for debate. “Downstairs on the casino floor are members of our pack.”
“They’re already in the hotel?” Mikhail asked in a tone that revealed he already knew the answer.
“What I’m about to say is going to be absurd and crazy,” Kimber choked out.
Mikhail’s handsome face was etched in grief, and she met his gaze. “I love you. I think I have from the moment I saw you I was too stupid and stubborn to realize it and now….”
“Shh,” Mikhail soothed and rose from his chair. He was by Kimber’s side in record time. “I know, from the moment I met you, I knew you were the one. I fell in love with you, and I’m not going to let you go. Love, at first sight, is real, as is mine for you,” he whispered, then leaned in and brushed his lips against her mouth.
