“This was too easy,” another distorted voice sounded from somewhere.

She blinked as her vision went hazy. Then she saw his face.

Ryan.

In a final attempt to escape, she stumbled across the room and pressed the panic button at the side of her desk. She only hoped it worked; she’d never used it before. This house was supposed to be her haven.

“Bitch!” Ryan shouted.

She felt her eyes close and then there was nothing.

CHAPTER8

ARCHIE

He deleted the email without opening it. He didn’t need to know what was inside the message. All that mattered was that his ex-wife was reaching out. Again. She only did that when she wanted something. He had nothing left to give her. She was the one who decided to cheat on him while he was out of the country.

It wasn’t unheard of. He might have been able to move past it if she wanted to stay together when he was finished. She told him she couldn’t be with him again. She was pregnant by the other guy.

That was all he needed to hear to sign the divorce papers and cut ties. Once he closed a door, it stayed fucking closed.

“Arch!” Tyler waved his hand to grab his attention.

Archie’s eyes flickered above his computer screen. “What?”

“Did you get the email?” Tyler questioned. “The new client; I think you’ll be perfect for this one.”

His eyes moved back to his screen and saw it at the top of his messages. “Opening it now.” He read the first bit. “This is super detailed.”

“Apparently she’s having issues with an ex.” Tyler crossed his arms.

Archie continued to scroll down the email. “Why doesn’t she ask the cops for help?”

“Her agent called this morning before sending the email. They’ve tried, but this guy has connections.”

“Shit.” Archie sighed. He knew the type, they were always trouble. It reminded him of the family Tabitha married into.

“Yeah. It’s not in the email, but apparently the guy attempted to kidnap her. He raped her before the cops even got to her house after she hit some panic button.”

“What the fuck?” Archie rolled back in his seat and looked at Tyler. “I’m not saying no, but why am I taking this case?”

“It’s a delicate matter and is going to require live in security for a while. This person also travels. It’ll keep you busy like you want.” Tyler typed something on his computer. “I can have one of the other guys take it instead if you really don’t want to mess with this one.”

Archie scrolled to the bottom of the email and froze on the girl’s picture. A face that hadn’t left his dreams since last weekend. “Mine.” He all but growled out.

“Great. I’ll CC you in on the agent’s details so you can go and meet them this afternoon.” Tyler returned his attention to his computer.

Images flooded him. Memories of a simpler time. Then the words that Tyler spoke caught up with him.

Ex.

Kidnapped.

Raped.

Not her. He brushed his hand down his face. “I need to make a call.” He was up and out of the office before Tyler could respond. His father was on speed dial.

It rang once before he picked up.
